After the End does that to me all the time. As it expands, I usually pick a good point to break it off at, and end up with 2 or 3 chapters instead of the one I had intended. The material I had ended chapter 9 to cover went from 9 through 11, 10,000 words instead of my usual about 3200 words for that story.
Like you, I like my chapters to be of similar length.

Two of my chapter fics are screaming at me. Update! Update! The drabble fairy says, No! Write more short squish! My poetry muse looks at me mournfully and says I've deserted poetry for prose (not true, but poetry muse gets obsessive).
Gah! Maybe I'll go knit a pair of mittens until they get their act together....
I can't wait till it's complete :) I check this site forupdate frequently :) I'm sure I'll be happy with the next chapter even if you aren't 100% sure about it!
