Sparkle, sparkle, little star

Yay, fun! northernveil came over, and we watched MSG and made pizza and watched clips and giggled and sang rather a lot. Also, she braided my hair, so I look all cool. We've seen the Timberlake hips o' doom, we've heard JC say "because... yes," we've made meeping sounds over Chris, we've had chocolate. A pleasant evening was had by all. I'm not going to watch ( Read more... )

I write stories and feedback to participate in the fun, to make connections, and to contribute to the ongoing fannish dialectic

You know, this is pretty much my perception too. I think this is a lot of why I think of fandom as a community.

Some kind of community, yeah. :-) Community seems to be another can of worms, though, because people bring varying perceptions and preconceptions to that word, too. You'd think people were all different, the way they keep having contradictory experiences and opinions...

Oh, I got home all right, even though I had to walk through the whole metro system because I went down at the wrong place near the Central. Heh.

But yes, I had funfun too. We must do it again. =)

So, you think, if we avoided the models/comparisons/paradigms, talking about things like this wouldn't be so conflictive.

dies laughing

No, no, I know you didn't say that. *g* The thing is, very few people really seem to deliberately use the particular paradigms -- they just use the language of various models. At some points it gets explicit, but really, most people don't examine their paradigms (love that word. Hee!), they just unconsciously use the language, and get into conflict because of vocabulary and assumptional differences. IMO.

However, I tend to agree with your concept that it is what it is, and it doesn't compare well in its entirety to any other model, and yet we will continue to try and find something to encapsulate it so we can just say "It's a gift!" or "It's a mule!", in the hopes that the person we're yelling at will say, "OH! I understand now! Of course, you're right!"

No, no. I'm just a terminology nitpicker. I want to argue about the things that I'm actually arguing about, dammit!

I think the funniest thing I said last year was "I just want all my friends to get along. In fandom." insane laughter
