It's been getting colder again. I thought it was going to stay the way it was, at least for awhile, but I suppose not ( Read more... )

Where I live, the tradition is to make the hot pot spicy with a special spice. Anything else can vary, but it has to have the spice.

Just curious, but what's in a Bellcius style hot pot?

Ah! That sounds good - a spicy flavor would be wonderful for winter. Do you know what the spice is called? Where do they use it?

In Bellcius, it's most important that meat form the center - I know that's the same for a lot of places, but what else goes into it has to accompany the flavor of the meat first and foremost. You can do some interesting things with spices and vegetables that way!

The Flower Pepper, it's commonly found in my hometown, which is why people started adding it to hot pots. It costs more outside of Vohemar, but nothing too expensive. It's usually ground and the food is dipped into it after being taken out of the hot pot.

Chili oil can replace the pepper, or you can have both if you'd like.

I'll have to see if there's any way the ship could order some - that sounds delicious! I'm sure I could find some if I looked hard enough.

Thank you so much for the suggestion, Mr...?

....there`s nothing. Not even any pain. It`s like he`s not even there at all. These rings are something else.

What about you? Still spirit-free? If yours keeps working, it`s gonna be the first ghost-free Long Night either of us has had.

...maybe we should celebrate. We could actually go to one of the bonfires for once, or whatever the ship`s doing. Not that I`m really a party person, but it`d be a nice change.

And quit complaining, you threw me twice as much as I threw you. If anyone has the right to complain, it`s me. ...means you`re making great progress, though.

I haven't seen any. It's hard to get used to, especially at this time of year; usually they're all over me now. Yuuko really made good on her price.

What makes you think I want to spend my first ghost-free Long Night with you, though, huh? I've spent the last two stuck in the same place as you! How would that be any different?!

...I guess if it's a ship celebration I'd have no choice but to see you there anyway. But that doesn't mean I'm going with you. That completely defeats the point of being free on Long Night!

Well. I don't know about twice as much. You fight more than I do. You're used to it. But it doesn't matter. I'm fine.

Whoa whoa whoa, who said anything about going with me? I'm just saying it beats spending the night locked up in a cabin with chalk marks all over the floor. And you'd definitely be stuck with me then. At a party the whole ship was at, you could avoid me all you wanted.

...you sure you're okay? Your body should be getting used to the training by now, but if you're still sore, I can slow things down a bit.

You did! You said we should celebrate! That implies both of us celebrating at the same time in each other's company! What the hell else would you have meant by that?!

I told you, I'm fine. I can take it. ...It is getting easier.

I could give you recipe if you'd like, Rikku. It's really not at all difficult to make-- I'm sure your ship's cooks would be more than up to it!

Oh, I know Miss Starr could make it, but then it's not your hot pots, it's just Miss Starr using your recipe.

[stubborn Rikku is stubborn]

How're things on your ship?

Oh, come on, there's nothing special about my hotpot...

My ship is fine! Things have quieted down quite a bit. Not that I mind. How are you?

Ah... hotpots... that does take me back. In my stealth patrol years, we huddled around a fire, and one of my men would graciously offer his helmet for cooking in... we had to boil the helmet by itself first, and then used whatever was nearby.

My helmet was reserved for the tea, of course.

W-was it, now.

Er. Was it... good hotpot, at least?

Back home, Bu-ling used whatever we had in the house, but one of Bu-ling's little brothers always wants sky squid in it. We didn't usually have that, though. And fried tofu is awesome in it nano da!

Fried tofu is delicious! And sky squid. Those are both great ideas. I'll be sure to make some with both of those in it.

What do you like in it, Watanuki-oniichan?

I'm particularly fond of beef hotpot, especially with eggs mixed in right before you serve it - my father always used to cook it like that.

Where are you from, Bu-ling?
