Depends on the model more than anything. Gateway makes some great machines, and it makes some dogs. This model doesn't have much of a rep that I know of, but will ask around for you.
I've heard people say that Gateway used to be amazing, but they've gone down the commercial rout in recent years. If anything, I would recommend you ask Dan or Erin, they know this stuff!
The advice I got last year when I was laptop shopping is that "HP has nice computers if you want a huge one to be a desktop replacement type thing with a big screen, etc." I also had two other people vouch for the quality of HP and one for Gateway, (which he said used to suck but no longer does).
Honestly, Vista is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. The only real problem with it is that it uses a lot of RAM, but as long as you have at least 2 gigs (and less than that would be sub-par these days anyway) you'll be more than fine, especially once all the service packs and updates are installed. It takes a little while to get used to the differences, but some of them are really an improvement over XP. Really, my biggest beefs with the operating system are the fact that there's an extra step to open the task manager when you hit ctrl+alt+del, and startup is very slow. Now that I'm used to it, I'd probably pick it over XP, given the choice.
As you know, I'm a recent mac convert. Before this I had an HP desktop. The computer did quite well for me, lasting me 5 1/2 years before I got a replacement for it. However, that's a long time ago, and I don't know how reliable their laptops are
