I wouldn't've cast McGann as Bush either. But, on the basis of his performance as Bush, he inaugurated qtrhorserider's now traditional celebrity-crushes on the lead actors of my favorite series, so I can't complain. Also Lieutanant Hornblower as written, i.e. from Bush's POV, couldn't have been made into a miniseries Starring Ioan Gryffud As Hornblower; so the character was doomed to be reenvisioned as soon as the Midshipman Hornblower miniseries was successful.
5. HELL FUCKING YES. Tolkien's also riffing on the tradition of OE queenship - the scene with the cup is a very close analogue of one in Beowulf, and right through Beowulf there's a subplot about what makes a good queen - what choices a queen can make which will be constructive and/or destructive.
I agree with your 4th and 5th points because I really do enjoy McGann as Bush but maybe that's because I haven't read all of the books yet.
Jackson made LotR more accessible, like you said. People who had never thought a second about Tolkien were suddenly interested in the movies and source material. I can honestly say that's what happened to mee. I saw FotR 12 (yes, 12) times in theatres at the ripe old age of 11 and then read the books over and over again. Jackson made me interested.
