His mom made the rounds in my family's neck of the woods when I was in WA State - she is a very impassioned speaker, and a very kind person. Also, I remember watching the MTV adaptation of Matthew Shepard's life when the murder first made headlines, and crying pretty much all the way through it. It's not like his was the first instance of homophobia, but it was one of the most publicized cases, and I think it reached out to a younger audience than was previously aware of it.
I've seen like one of the made for TV movies about him. I know it wasn't the first instance of homophobia but I know that it made an impact on my life. It was the first time I'd heard about anything like that. I watched Judy talk on the GLAAD media awards this summer and she brought me to tears.
