ARRRRRRRGH! *pulls out hair*

I am so tired of arguing with my father about the whole Conan vs Leno thing. No matter what I say, he will answer with, "But Leno's better! Conan doesn't know what he's doing. He's an idiot." LENO IS NOT BETTER. I DON'T CARE IF HIS RATINGS ARE BETTER, HE'S NOT BETTER. He's just mainstream compared to Conan. I get that Conan is weird to a lot ( Read more... )

What's kind of interesting about this whole thing is 1. Jay did not always have good ratings, he was for a long time consistently beaten by Letterman and 2. Jay's ratings for his 10 pm show were HORRID which a lot of people contribute to the reason why Conan didn't get better ratings.

Jay had strong primetime lead ins when his ratings were good on the Tonight Show, the network was stronger as a whole and he reaped the benefits. I have trouble believing that Conan hosting the Tonight Show is the problem, if Conan had better lead ins and was given a chance like Leno got, his ratings would have improved.

If Jay was such a ratings champ- his show at 10 wouldn't have failed because people who loved him on the Tonight Show would have followed him there. I think this basically proves Leno has no fans, he only has people who will watch him if something good is on before he's on.

And sorry to my parents, but the baby boomers just aren't going to be relevant for late night tv much longer. It's our generation that television needs to appease.

OMG, I love you for bringing up such awesome arguments. I wish I had thought of these when talking to my dad. With the ratings thing, he claims that Jay pwned Letterman within a month of him taking over The Tonight Show, so if you're right about it taking him a few years, I will so rub that in my dad's face. But anyway, you are so very right about the primetime lead-ins. CBS has been winning the 10:00pm slot, so it's really no wonder that Letterman's been winning the late night ratings.

And sorry to my parents, but the baby boomers just aren't going to be relevant for late night tv much longer. It's our generation that television needs to appease.

I tried to use that argument, but my dad said that obviously all the young people are watching Letterman now and not Conan since Letterman is bringing in the ratings. *sigh*

I'm not sure how long it was Letterman beat Jay, but I know Jay had at least over a year until his ratings began to rise. Which is longer then Conan's 7 months in any case. I heard Jay also had a big interview that sparked the ratings change- Hugh Grant, who at the time was involved in controversy ( ... )

Yes to everything in this comment. Especially to the part about Leno not always getting good ratings. I really do feel that Conan would have improved his numbers over time, especially with Leno out of the ten p.m. slot.

I remember Conan did an interview on another sort of talk show once, and I watched it. I really liked him. He's got spunk! And I'm not even American!! =D

Go cut your hair, Leno.

I do not know how I could cope if I had a Leno fan in the house. I feel so bad for you, bb.

Dude, it's so sad. Both of my parents love Leno. But they only watch him at 10:00, because they are usually in bed by 11:00. So obviously they know who's better for The Tonight Show. *rolls eyes*

If they watched a week of Conan, they would never look back. However, that would mean they would have to go to bed and wake up 2 hours later. Shame that's too much of a sacrifice.

I think everyone pretty much covered what I was going to say...especially about the lead in material.

Also - if your parents AREN'T GOING TO WATCH LENO @ 11:30 - WHY the hell do they even care? Baby Boomer FAIL.

EXACTLY. My dad just wants to prove that his taste is better and mine always fails. Whatever. Whatever. Also, he says Conan is stupid for not just taking the 12:05 slot, because now Conan will most likely disappear into oblivion, and even if he doesn't, he will never get the same salary/success that he was getting at NBC. I do sort of agree with him there, but I am hoping that Conan proves us wrong in seven months.

I don't blame Conan...I wouldn't have taken the spot, either.

It's all about principle to me. Conan got screwed. Did Leno get screwed when NBC made the deal years ago? Maybe - but they were under no obligation to renew his contract, either. Take the hint, Leno.

I think Leno should have stepped up, said Conan deserved a fair shot, and gone of the air with a bit of grace.

Now, no matter what actually happened behind the scenes, Leno looks like a bit of an ass.

And I always preferred Letterman to Leno, anyways...
