1) tell your boss you have an immediate and pressing need to go to japan to "check the japanese reactor lab"

If it's any consolation, you are not alone. Adult life sucks; work is a gigantic hairy beast of suck (especially when you are so good at it that you have responsibility, authority and accountability). So, I feel your pain (well, except for the blast radius part).

Hang in there. It will get better, or at least have periods where it will suck less. :)
