Can We Talk About: Sherlock

Jan 17, 2012 16:12

So, I watched BBC Sherlock.

I didn't actually really know anything about this show going in. safety_caesars had suggested it, having been introduced by somebody else, and I was like, "hey, okay, sure." Becky has good taste, or at least terrible taste that's similar to mine (which obviously makes it good taste), and I like Sherlock Holmes-flavored things in ( Read more... )

benedict cumberbatch sounds like eggs, this is useful, rambling again, i was not expecting a boner, ladies in canon, long-ass entry, i'm on a boat motherfuckers, if you know then you know; if you don't, living as locke & edgar, minoring in alcoholism, sherlock, this is becky's fault, please win harder, can we talk about, entries that take me 5 hours to write at

Ever have situations where you feel like you can't or shouldn't write fic of something you've watched/played/read because it's been so long, you feel you need to refresh yourself on what the characters are actually like?

YES

*especially* when I'm still fannish for it, because I find that fandom and fanon can really tip my perception of characters and events.

Yay! I'm not alone! I think a lot of people out there have warped perceptions of characters. It's why I've seen a major discrepancy in Rydia fans where some think adult Rydia is a sweet and innocent flower with a little girl heart, while other Rydia fans think she's a naughty dominatrix that wants to whip everyone into submission.

I see a lot of alternate interpretations of characters that vary a lot. Like Quistis gets the "cold ice queen" treatment, when really she starts out as a very personable teacher (and giggles at Squall in the hallway). Squall, even, gets written as a robot, whereas in the game he has a lot of thoughts on the side about a lot of things. And I've seen all varieties of Rosa, and Edge.

It's interesting. Because characterization is variable, and each person's interpretation of a character is going to be different -- that's what's so cool about fandom. But there's also a line between "I want to write this character from this angle and try it" and "I am going to only pay attention to the parts of canon that I like and I will just ignore the rest like it doesn't exist"...

I'm starting to think the most fun part of watching Sherlock is being able to enjoy it when people on my flist write gushing reviews of it. :-)

they are each other's The Friend

I really like the way you summed it all up there. That's part of why I'm drawn to House/Wilson, not so much as a pairing but as a friendship. It's very similar, by design.

I wasn't able to keep up with House - I havent watched it for at least two seasons if not more - so i dont know what its like now, but I really do agree. I love the dynamic between House and Wilson so very much. I love relationships where the characters need each one so badly, whether or not it's romantic/physical/completely platonic. House and Wilson are just each other's The Friend and that's all there needs to be.

Re: wine: we heard the episode was really sad. ALCOHOLIC HEART PROTECTION WAS NEEDED.

Re: show: I definitely recommend it if you like quirky British humour and attractive dudes!

All I have to say is that, while this show is generally amazing, the second episode of the first season is one of the most godawful hours of TV I've ever had my brain pummeled by. I just thought it was so bad, from the very beginning, with the cheesy "Oriental" woowoo. And it only got worse from there. Everything else: fantastic.

We actually commented on that at the time. Like the very first thing Becky said was, "I hate when shows make Asian characters wear traditional Asian dresses because omg they're Asian" and it just like... went downhill from there. I agree with that.

I'd just like to second everything you mentioned here, especially regarding comfort fanzones because yes and that's exactly it and yes even, but I would also like to announce that amazeballs is now going to be used for everything good in my life from this point forward.

Basically, now I feel important for making an announcement and including amazeballs in it.
