Can We Talk About: Sherlock

Jan 17, 2012 16:12

So, I watched BBC Sherlock.

I didn't actually really know anything about this show going in. safety_caesars had suggested it, having been introduced by somebody else, and I was like, "hey, okay, sure." Becky has good taste, or at least terrible taste that's similar to mine (which obviously makes it good taste), and I like Sherlock Holmes-flavored things in ( Read more... )

Ever have situations where you feel like you can't or shouldn't write fic of something you've watched/played/read because it's been so long, you feel you need to refresh yourself on what the characters are actually like?

YES

*especially* when I'm still fannish for it, because I find that fandom and fanon can really tip my perception of characters and events.

Yay! I'm not alone! I think a lot of people out there have warped perceptions of characters. It's why I've seen a major discrepancy in Rydia fans where some think adult Rydia is a sweet and innocent flower with a little girl heart, while other Rydia fans think she's a naughty dominatrix that wants to whip everyone into submission.

I see a lot of alternate interpretations of characters that vary a lot. Like Quistis gets the "cold ice queen" treatment, when really she starts out as a very personable teacher (and giggles at Squall in the hallway). Squall, even, gets written as a robot, whereas in the game he has a lot of thoughts on the side about a lot of things. And I've seen all varieties of Rosa, and Edge.

It's interesting. Because characterization is variable, and each person's interpretation of a character is going to be different -- that's what's so cool about fandom. But there's also a line between "I want to write this character from this angle and try it" and "I am going to only pay attention to the parts of canon that I like and I will just ignore the rest like it doesn't exist"...

The main one I've seen for Edge was being a womanizer which is sometimes taken to the extreme of being a pervert (I'm guilty of this :P ), but I can see more of a focus on being a brash and headstrong honorable ninja too considering you meet him when he's going after Rubicante out of revenge, and there's the very emotional moment where he meets his transformed parents. The whole hot-headed thing fits Rydia and Edge together pretty well, I think. And you know my complaints about most interpretations of Rosa. :P FF4 had a lot more depth to its characters than a lot of people acknowledge, mostly because of the simpler script ( ... )
