I remember the video vividly although I wasn't much of a Bowie fan. It's not the use of the clown so much as where the visions are used - I suppose Sam's would often update him on his condition but these don't seem to serve any purpose.
I saw lovely Glenister on Wossie when he was saying that this is a very different show and would take a while to get into. At the moment, I think half the problem is that it is not very different, just LOM but not written as well. You're right about Alex - she's seems to be using the 'none of it's real' thing to behave completely differently to her 2008 life. Or maybe it's because she doesn't have the responsibilities. She also seems to be ignoring police procedure - questioning suspects on her own and all that - undoing all of Sam's influence!
I missy Sam/Gladys/Dorothy. And there has been no mention of Annie at all.
I'm enjoying Ashes to Ashes a lot - it's not as good as LOM, but I look forward to it each week. I think I've accepted that it's a different show, with a bit of a different pace and different focus given Alex is not the same as Sam. I'm actually finding Alex's assumptions about where she is less aggravating than I expected from the first episode (where I kept wanting to hit her because she didn't seem to care that Shaz was in danger). However, I do agree that it's about time something happened to give her a bit of a jolt - and I think it might next episode. I'll go on enjoying the series even if it doesn't, but I think some pertinent twists could make it even better. At the moment I can't see Alex getting as rattled as Sam did in series two - she's a bit too self-assured.
I'm in total agreement about the clown - it seems to be rather meaningless at the moment and is "just a thing to scare the viewers". I'd like it to gather some significance. And I too am enjoying Gene and Alex's interactions and I was positive I wouldn't.
