I've resisted commenting too much on Ashes to Ashes so far. I want it to be great but it's just not there at the moment.
The problem, as I see it, centres around Alex's assumptions that she knows exactly what is going on because of what happened to Sam. The creators have tried to make that part of the show (which is less amusing than they realise), but what I think needs to happen is something completely different to pull the rug out from under Alex and us, the audience. Perhaps flip Alex back to 2008 so she can see the effect her coma/death has had on Molly or her colleagues (a la Lovely Bones). I know that goes against the 'all happening in a microsecond' timeline but would shake things up.
The other thing that I really don't like about the new series is/are the clown visions (for want of a better word). In Life on Mars, they were often integral to the plot whereas they just seemed to be shoe-horned into A2A. The one in last night's episode while the gospel choir was singing broke the flow completely.
And last but not least - I don't like the theme tune!
Gene is still wonderful and the attraction between him and Drake, which I was particularly worried about, is one of the best things about the show. I know it's still early days but things need to gel quickly for us to see more.
