Yep - I'm one of the legions who grew up reading Susan Cooper and her peers (she always had recommendation quotes on other books that I always ended up enjoying) - if they destroy the book I will at the very least have a major strop.
CE *will* be a good Rider I think. Merriman...I always saw him as Patrick Troughton, possibly because I first read The Dark is Rising quintet at the same time I saw The Box of Delights
Something tells me they won't make Greenwitch anytime soon :-(

Troughton would be a perfect Merriman - just the right combo of friendly and dangerous. And The Mind Robber is my favorite Two to date, which goes with how Merriman understands that he's in a story and has to act accordingly.

Dear filmmakers,
There are these things called "archetypes". You may have heard of them. They're kind of a little bit important a lot when you're telling giant epic stories. I would tell you to go talk to George Lucas, but he's not doing so well either these days. Find a librarian and beg her on your knees for forgiveness for what you're doing to this book anything at all by Joseph Campbell. Or maybe a middle school-level guide to myth and legend. Srsly. If all else fails, ask a third grader why the bad guy isn't supposed to have a white horse.
