Thoughts on Actresses

Hey, so I just did a journal entry talking about the actresses on Firefly and more recently Dollhouse, and some trends that link them together as well as a basic-short-little-critique of what I have seen so far of Dollhouse. Let me know your thoughts/opinions, agreements/disagreements.

You're welcome to your opinions, obviously, but I do disagree. I felt that the character of Inara, played by the actress Morena Baccarin, was very spot on. Why? Look, she's playing a "space geisha" which, even in the society 500 years hence, is still seen by some as barely better than a high-paid prostitute. I felt that she played that role excellently. Mal, doing the 25th century equivalent of "dipping her pigtails in the ink", really makes her uncomfortable in her position there. And of course realizing that she loves him as well... but has a policy of not sleeping with the crew. And Mal, well he doesn't want to love someone who's sleeping with the 'verse, even if for lots of credits ( ... )

Well yeah I love the character I guess that the issue I have with her acting is that she seems distant from the reality of the scene, like she is very aware of herself as an actress looking the right way and moving the right way, and yes some of that can be handed off the geisha method acting, but I feel like she as "the actress" is very aware of herself Morena, not herself as Inara. I mean in reality if I really didn't like her I wouldn't watch the show and I love the show so obviously it doesn't bother be that much, it was just something I noticed in Echoes character as well. Maybe its just a pet-peeve from myself as an actor.

Perhaps... But I've seen her act in other things and she was a different character. I guess in Firefly, the "distant from reality" that you see, I see as part of the character not really feeling like she fits in with the crew. Mal is always dissing her, and she's in love with Mal. Jayne is always making crude comments, but Kaylee she's friends with and that shows... but I see that she grows closer to the other characters---unfortunately with only 13 episodes we really don't get to see a character arc for her ( ... )

Oh yeah, I'm not so fond of Eliza's acting as Echo, but I've only seen 2 episodes so far. (I've got 5 on TiVo to watch, darnit.)

The boss.. she was the wife on "The 6th Sense" I believe...

You are not alone, I really agree about Echo. From the first moment I heard Dollhouse would star Eliza Dushku I was truly worried. It's my opinion that she is not (ability-wise) capable of carrying a decent show. She worked okay in Buffy as a side character (that thankfully we didn't have to deal with too much), but beyond that.. not so much. Her character in Buffy/Angel was a really interesting idea as a dark counterpart to Buffy and then as one of the most substantial "souls" Angel saves (in his series), but again, that was just the role/writing ( ... )

Yeah I'm just really disappointed in the show, why couldn't they do more firefly instead :(

It would make much for money
