Well, I have a few weeks to work on the bonus question. I definitely couldn't answer it now! But apparently he's been doing this for the past three years: spelling out what that bonus question will be on the first unit test either before the class or on the first day of class, reiterating it somewhere along the way, and then putting it on the first unit test.
Now, there's a *lot* of enzymes and shit to remember, and it's all or nothing, no partial credit. And then it's comparing three biochemical pathways and explaining the differences. Kind of a lot for five points, but it's the principle of the thing. ;-)
I've been thinking I want a digital recording thingy for my lectures this semester as well. The one I'm currently leaning toward is the Olympus VN-4100PC Digital Voice Recorder, but I haven't bought it yet so I can't give you any feedback.
I'll give that a look, thanks. Someone else had mentioned Olympus as a good brand to me, though she'd expressed some annoyance at the filenames making it hard to figure out which lecture was which. Dunno if it was that model or not, or, for that matter, why you wouldn't be able to change the filename once it's uploaded into the computer.
Thanks! I hope so. It was quite a bit more straightforward than the prep instructions had suggested.
Yeah, no hair-pulling. Or at least minimal hair-pulling. *g* By October there will probably be at least *some* as the deadlines for Snusa and the Exchange approach. And yes, the point is for it all to be fun. I may need to make a banner to that effect and hang it over the computer.
I think it's probably good to have as a backup. My note taking is pretty good, but there's still always the chance of missing something or the importance of something said earlier in the lecture not being clear until after something said later.

Yay for more writing and for doing what speaks to you. We like your hair - it's all full and pretty and needs to stay on your head.
I have no idea on recording things. Sorry.

Hope the writing goes well. Try not to over stretch yourself too much, not good to be pulling out hair over things that are supposed to be fun.
I'm wondering about the recording too... My note taking is a little rusty, so it might be the best thing all round.

There may be other cheaper routes, but I'm less familiar with them.
Hope this helps!

I ended up going with the Olympus VN-4100 digital voice recorder. Looks like it should do the trick.
