Yay! <3 The trick to prevent yourself from being bored is to either go stargazing or go hang out in a public place that won't turn off it's lights (like starbucks, lol).

This is so cool! I didn't hear about this last year (living in residence is like living under a rock) but this year I'm definately taking part. Good time to read a book by candlelight or something.

Thank you fro spreading the word!

PHHHT wrong account there, sorry. XD firebird_88 March 27 2010, 02:52:37 UTC
Phhht don't worry about your typo, I didn't notice it. xD;;

It's a fairly new thing, don't feel so bad. :) Australia started it in 2007, and every year more and more people have been jumping on. In only three years it's turned into a huge global movement, which is really cool. :) I always drag my roommates/classmates/LJ friends/Facebook friends into doing it with me. XD

Ah, also, the trick is to go hang out with people at a public place (like a Starbucks) that won't turn off it's lights regardless. ^^; Or go stargazing, that works too lol.

I still don't see the point. It doesn't raise awareness to anything. The people doing this are the same ones who do the other, more important things like protests or use energy efficient appliances and what not.

1 billion people participating doesn't raise awareness to anything? o.o It shows that a lot of the world is aware that we are messing up the planet. It's psychological, it doesn't necessarily have to be about money or anything.

Also, they did do stats in Australia (I don't know if they did it anywhere else, they may have done it for NYC) during Earth Hour just to see how much energy it saved, and it did save quite a lot. The fact that people can see these numbers and realize how much turning off some appliances can do on a grand scale is helpful.

Also, it's come a long way. It was just Sydney that did this in 2007. Now it's global, in 120 countries, and recognized by the U.N. That counts a lot, at least from my POV. :/

Also, I seem to recall that the original purpose of Earth Hour was to show the world leaders how many of their countrymen care about climate change. It's kind of a roundabout, peaceful and very noticeable way of saying "pass a bill to help the climate already because this many of us know that shit is happening to our planet and it needs to be fixed".

Thanks for the heads-up, I heard about Earth Day but I would have totally forgotten about it otherwise.
I'll see what I can do, I love candle-light anyway and every excuse for doing so is more than welcome. But since I'm waiting for my mother and brother to arrive this evening, I don't know how eager they'll be to unpack the car by candle-light only in case they arrive just at that time.

And now I'm curious to see how turn off the Eiffel Tower.

:D Cool! Or you could go stargaze or hang out in a public place that won't have its lights turned off (like the inside of a library or something).

OOOH! If you see them turning of the Eiffel Tower, can you take a pic? 83 That's one of the popular ones!

I'm not sure you'll ever be able to turn enough lights off to see more than the evening star in Paris.*sigh* And I'd love to take a picture of the Eiffel Tower in the dark, especially since I'm not living far away, but it seems like my mother won't arrive that late after all and we're going to spend the night at my uncle's place in Versailles then. And I don't think I'll be able to make my uncle turn off the lights then. He's absolutely pro environment stuff and all, but I don't think he'd be interested in those kind of things. *sadface*
I could always cheat and take a picture of the Eiffel Tower late in the night? They're turning off the lights at about 3 or 3.30 a.m. if I'm not mistaken.

Oooh okay. xD; It's okay, Earth Hour does sound kind of... random and small. I had a hard time convincing my family to do it a well, but the effect is amaaaazing from all the videos that I've seen around the world. I think NASA or someone tried taking a satellite picture of the dark half of the world to see how it looked different from normal times.

I mean, in the end, it's just to raise awareness. :p Turning off the lights is less important than knowing what's happening to the planet, I guess.

Also, I know I owe you a few posts. X.x; I'll get to them eventually, I have to study for a crazy exam on Monday. OTZ

LOL. Well... that too, I guess. xD

I know, college kids seem to care far less. :/ And we have no control over most of our facilities (save for our dorms), but I guess every little bit counts?

*HUG*
