Part 1 Christmas Mayhem || 01.12.13
#2
The camera flashed again, following their every steps. Jaejoong pulled out a pair of shades and put them on, pulling squeals from their fangirls, but the truth is the camera flashes hurt his eyes. Rolling the lollipop that never leaves his mouth, he tucked his hands into the pockets of his jeans and made his way to the van with a little help from the bodyguards. Choi Seunghyun followed suit, seemingly traumatized by the girls’ shrieks as he slumped next to Jaejoong, boneless. Shim Changmin hopped into the van next, ruffling his hair before leaning into his seat, exhausted.
Only Kim Hyunjoong, who entered the van last, still had enough energy to display an amazing smile out the window and wave to their fans. Changmin scowled in disgust and kicked Hyunjoong on the leg, and laughed when Hyunjoong had to maintain his facade in front of the fans despite the pain. As the van drove off, Hyunjoong turned to Changmin, “YOU, SON OF SATAN!”
Changmin was about to retaliate when Yunho, their manager, reached from the front seat to close Changmin’s mouth. “No shouting in the van! We have established this rule, guys, come on!” Annoyed Changmin licked the palm of the hand covering his mouth, making Yunho shriek. “DISGUSTING! HOW OLD ARE YOU, 5?!”
“I thought you said no shouting?” Seunghyun pouted, “Hyung, you always break your own rule.” He sighed, leaning to the window. “When I break them, I get scolded. Why do you treat me differently?”
“Seunghyun-ah, hyung never…” Yunho tried to reason with his most negative member while wiping his hand with hand sanitizer.
“Jaejoongie is hungry,” Jaejoong cut in. “Jaejoongie wants to eat. Yunnie, food.”
“Be honest with me hyung,” Changmin turned to Jaejoong, “Which planet do you come from? Come on, your secret is safe with me.”
Jaejoong tilted his head, seemed to really contemplated Changmin’s question, before shaking his head. “Information is confidential. Jaejoongie must not tell humans about it.”
“I cannot with you guys,” Hyunjoong sighed, pulling out a mirror to check on himself. “Ah my eyeliner is a bit smudged. Geez, this is all you guys’ fault. Don’t you realize as the number one rock band in this country you ought to always look your 110%? Put some more effort!”
“My 200% is like Jaejoong hyung’s 10% so it doesn’t matter,” Seunghyun replied, still sulking.
Yunho sighed and resigned to his fate. He, after all, is bound to a lifetime contract with Mayhem.
Mayhem, the currently most famous rock band in South Korea, consists of vocalist Kim Jaejoong, guitarist Kim Hyunjoong, bassist Shim Changmin, and drummer Choi Seunghyun. Jung Yunho, the manager, was also their talent scouter. He found them one by one at the start of his career as the inheritor of Dream Motion Entertainment who refused to look like he only rides his father’s success. He found each of them one by one and put them together in a band. Somehow, this band turned into the biggest income DME ever had, and that Yunho had proven himself.
He first met Kim Hyunjoong back in university. The ladies’ man was surely well known around the students; guys hate him and girls love him. The drama major had always attracted attention wherever he goes, and sue him if he enjoyed it too much. Yunho paid no mind on him, though, until a friend dragged him to watch a musical from the drama department. Kim Hyunjoong couldn’t sing, which was why he didn’t get the lead, but then he became the main supporter, who played the guitar on the story, and damn...Yunho might have fallen in love that day. With his guitar-playing skill, not with Hyunjoong himself.
Seunghyun he found at a random club he and friends went to. Hyunjoong, after Yunho made acquaintance of the guy, was the first one to spot him. Hyunjoong pointed at the tall, dark, handsome guy who stood at the corner of the stage, seemingly like he wanted to let the world swallow him whole and to simply disappear. Later on though, when who Yunho later found out as Seunghyun’s brother, pushed him to do a drum solo at the bridge of the song, it was Hyunjoong’s turn to fall in love with Seunghyun’s 3-pedaled magic attraction. He even went so far as to turn and threw the drumstick to the air, before catching it and continuing the song, although Yunho could swear Seunghyun’s pink-stained cheeks.
Changmin, unlike the other two, found him. “Ajusshi, you’re in the way,” was the first thing that brat has said to Hyunjoong, who was at the time busy looking at his reflection in the mirror-tinted door of the school gym entrance. Seunghyun noted the bass case Changmin was holding as the boy made his way up to the stage. It was Yunho’s sister high school graduation, and he was forced to be her friend’s date while she insisted to go with Seunghyun. Hyunjoong voluntarily, uninvitedly, tagged along and stole the spotlight as high school girls squaled at the presence of that handsome university guy. Changmin turned out was in a band, and he stole Yunho’s heart the way Hyunjoong and Seunghyun did before, when he performed that night. It took Yunho quite some time to convince the brat this band he was making would exceed the popularity of Changmin’s high school band, and that he would surely be more famous than he did in his high school. Of course, Changmin laughed at him when he said he didn’t have a vocalist yet.
The four of them were together when they first heard Kim Jaejoong sang. Christmas eve, where three single seniors had nothing better to do and dragged their junior, namely Changmin, out for a drink, they passed Jaejoong on a streetcorner. Changmin was the first to stop on his track, eyes trained to the guy with his guitar, singing happily even in the freezing weather. His face red from frostbite, and breath puffing white cloud, but his voice was definitely worth stopping in the freezing weather for. The other 3 soon realized what caught Changmin’s attention.
Yunho then drew a business card from his pocket and gave them to Jaejoong. “I think you’re the perfect member to complete my band,” he said with a smile.
Jaejoong stared at the card, a little confused at first, before returning Yunho’s smile. “Yeah, I might just be the person you’re looking for,” he replied confidently.
And that was how Mayhem was created.
Yunho wondered, now, how did it not occur to him that the combination of these four would result in a mayhem, literally?
***
Changmin was the first to notice, being the most perceptive member of the band he is.
Jaejoong has an addiction.
And it was pretty bad.
He started noticing when Jaejoong suddenly stopped smoking and shortly resorted to lollipops. “Someone said smoking is not good for me,” Jaejoong only replied when the others asked why he suddenly quit when it had taken Yunho years to try getting him to stop. “But my mouth gets lonely,” he then continued as he unwrapped another lollipop.
Jaejoong spent an immense time online, either on his laptop, playing Vindictus, or on his phone, talking to someone. He likes to tease even his members using made up voices, but then Changmin realized he never used his own voice and only talks in that particular voice to his online friend. His game character is a girl, a witch named Evie, so at first Changmin thought he was just getting into character. Later on though, he started hearing of Jaejoong’s playmate, Kai, a non-suspecting college guy with obvious crush on Evie.
Changmin may never heard Jaejoong said anything about Kai, but even when he’s dead tired, he made time to go online if it was just for 10 minutes.
That alone tells something.
And as Yunho puked at how cheesy Jaejoong’s newest lyric sound, "Her voice is like having a warm calming tea in one freezing day of January," Changmin knew he referred to a certain someone he only knew by voice.
Seunghyun then confirmed Changmin’s suspicion when he said Jaejoong often mumbles to himself, with mentions of a certain name.
So, Jaejoong is in love.
And the person Jaejoong loves kinda like him back.
But that guy thought Jaejoong is a girl, and it is much too risky for him to actually tell Kai who he really is.
How complicated is that?
***
“Kim Jaejoong, shut the damn thing off!”
Jaejoong ignored the shout, “Kai, head to the chamber first, I’ll clean up here.”
“No,” came the reply from the speaker, “You go ahead to the chamber. I’ll shoot them up from the towers.”
“Oh dear God help me,” Yunho groaned. “Jaejoong, please, we have a photoshoot in two hours!”
Hyunjoong watched the banter as he lounged on the sofa, “Gosh it still makes me shiver to hear Jaejoong speak using that voice.”
Changmin groaned back from the other sofa he was napping on, “Shut the fuck up hyung, someone is trying to sleep!”
“HOW DO YOU SLEEP THROUGH THAT?!” Yunho pointed at Jaejoong, sounds of swords clashing and magic spells exploding filled the room.
Seunghyun watched the others in silence, before leaning down to Jaejoong, “To the right.”
“Thanks,” Jaejoong replied and slayed the enemy Seunghyun mentioned.
Hyunjoong shivered again, “Stop using that voice, for god’s sake!!!”
“EVERYONE GET READY, PLEASE, WE’RE LEAVING IN AN HOUR!” Yunho threw his hand up and walked away. “How did I end up with these bunch of idiots?!”
“YOU’RE THE IDIOT!” Changmin retorted before finally getting off the couch. “Urgh, useless manager is useless. Go get ready guys. Jae-hyung, finish the mission fast.”
“Aye aye,” Jaejoong replied, still using that voice to annoy Hyunjoong.
Hyunjoong fake gagged at Jaejoong and jumped off the couch, he went straight to the dresser to make sure he looks representable in front of the throng of fangirls waiting in front of their apartment building.
“Aren’t you going to get dressed, Seunghyun-hyung?” Changmin asked.
“Nah, I can’t change the way I look no matter what I wear,” Seunghyun solemnly replied, looking at the faded Nirvana shirt he was wearing with his black ripped jeans. Changmin was contemplating on forcing Seunghyun to add color to his wardrobe, but his mysterious look was what drew the fangirls in anyway. They didn’t know, Seunghyun simply has serious self esteem issue, there really was nothing mysterious about him.
Changmin yawned and ruffled his already messed up hair, making it look better than it already is. He then watched Jaejoong as he claimed the trophy of the game. “Byebye Kai~” he bid his online friend goodbye and shut down his laptop. He turned to Changmin, who was staring at him, and tilted his head. “What?” Jaejoong asked, using his normal voice.
“Are you sure Kai knows you’re a guy?”
“Hmmmmm?” Jaejoong shrugged, and popped a lollipop into his mouth.
“You’re gonna break his heart.”
“Hm?” Jaejoong tilted his head again, having no clue what Changmin was talking about.
Changmin sighed and dismissed the subject, “Go get ready hyung.”
Jaejoong just stood up and grabbed his wallet, not even changing out of his sweatpants as he put his coat on and walked towards the door. Seunghyun chased after him. Changmin stared at Hyunjoong, still busy putting on his 10th layer of makeup. Changmin shrugged and put on his own coat, “Yunho’s right, they’re a bunch of idiots.”
***
Jaejoong slumped onto the space designated for him at the back of the van.
These past few days had been exhausting. With the upcoming concert, they’d been squeezing rehearsals in between the group’s neverending photoshoots and random TV guestings; that made Seunghyun’s more emo, Changmin a little grumpier and Hyunjoong endless whining, (and to make it worse...Yunho’s constant preaching).
A loud sigh suddenly was heard at his side. Jaejoong, after years of living with his members had sort of memorized every little move of his members. This particular sigh sounds more like Seunghyun.
“Go on and sleep,” Jaejoong said as he rubbed his eyes and took his phone out. Seunghyun answered, that sound more like a growl, before soon drifting off to sleep.
From the seats in front of him, he could hear Changmin lecturing Yunho on how to take care of his talents, while Hyunjoong was grumbling in response about the lack of appreciation he received. He would like Yunho to let the fangirls “shower him with love” more, which Changmin gladly translated for Yunho that Hyunjoong was simply asking for some girls to be allowed into his room. Yunho gladly replied by choking Hyunjoong to death.
Jaejoong checked out his phone as he popped another lollipop into his mouth. No messages or emails even. Hmmm. Kai hadn’t messaged him for a while, they’d been exchanging emails for quite sometime now but the last email had been way before they’d done a mission together. And that was like, almost a week ago. Now, he wondered if he was okay. The last time they talked, Kai said he was still looking for a ticket, and he sounded so...sad.
“Then get him one.”
“Geez, here I thought you’re asleep.”
“Can’t with you keep mumbling something to your lollipop, hyung.”
“Then go back to sleep.”
“Seriously, though.”
Jaejoong threw a lollipop at Seunghyun in effort to shut him up then continued to ignored him. He then decided to check his twitter, right, he should be updating his fans regarding his life and probably his instagram too, maybe it’s time to upload something new...something like, and then he was opening his phone camera and taking a few shots of Seunghyun’s sleeping figure, with his mouth open wide. Satisfied with the fans response, he checked his Line and replied on some messages as well. Having it all done, he was left staring at his phone. Contemplating.
But suddenly his phone beeped.
Changminnie : Come on, he’s probably sulking right now. Cheer him up!
When Jaejoong looked up, Changmin was grinning at him...knowingly. He couldn’t understand why they’re pushing him like this, Kai is a friend, yes, but they’re making it looked like he has a thing with this guy, a guy he haven’t even met before. Isn’t that ridiculous?
But okay, since Changmin is being an ass...
from: Evie
to: Kai
How's the ticket? Get any?
Had a tiring day~~~ I hope you're not sulking (just like what my friend said)
Anyway, Good vibes! Good night~^^
Jaejoong screenshot the message and Line-d it to Changmin, with a caption: “There, happy?” Changmin laughed and turned around to give Jaejoong two thumbs up.
“Jerk.”
Jaejoong waited for a reply, waited until finally they got into their apartment.
But there was nothing, except an email from a bank and a couple of Hello Kitty sales popping up on his screen. He hastily closes the tab and went to sleep.
When he woke up the next morning, he found himself in a foul mood.
from: Kai
to: Evie
I'm afraid I can't attend the con ;___________;
Jaejoong vent out his frustration by playing the noisiest game he owned with the speaker turned to top level, successfully driving Yunho insane.
***
It’s probably unfair.
But Seunghyun was the one who gave him the idea.
Changmin seemed to approve.
Hyunjoong will probably bitch if he didn’t do what Seunghyun wants, and that will surely take a toll on Seunghyun’s already non-existent self esteem.
Not being able to resist Seunghyun and Hyunjoong’s expectant eyes, he finally walked over to Yunho. He handed Yunho a piece of paper with Kai’s email on it. Yunho stared at the paper, unsure of what to do. Jaejoong chewed on the already lollipop-less stick on his mouth before he spoke up, “I want him at the fanparty.”
Seunghyun and Hyunjoong cheered at the background.
“What?” Yunho frowned, “Jaejoongie that would be unfair.”
Jaejoong pouted.
Seunghyun pouted as well and Hyunjoong made killing motion to Yunho.
“There were 5000 fans in your concert, and we’re supposed to choose 30 totally random people. It would be unfair to add whoever that is on the list.”
“Make it 31!!!” Hyunjoong added, “Why are you so mean?!”
“Hyung…” Seunghyun added, face close to crying.
Yunho swallowed.
Jaejoong then turned to Changmin who had been silent all these time, “Changminnie…”
Changmin took the paper instead, “I’ll give this to Taeyang directly so he’ll send the invitation.”
“Wha-- WAIT! CHANGMIN! YOU CANNOT DO THAT!” Yunho ran after Changmin, who already rushed out of the apartment.
Jaejoong turned to Seunghyun and Hyunjoong, who gave him thumb ups.
Somehow, Jaejoong let a smile sneaked into his lips.
***
The music was loud and blaring. He wasn’t used to this but Junsu was there with him, walking in front of him with ease, swaying to the music a little like he belong. Occasionally, Junsu danced with random people, until Yoochun was pissed and dragged him off the dance floor.
Junsu laughed and latched to Yoochun’s side, “You ready, Chunnie?”
“Gosh, no,” Yoochun pushed him away, “I don’t think I can do this.” and added, voice trembling.
“Come on, this is your big night,” Junsu waved the two passess, like an excited kid, before dragging Yoochun towards the VIP room of the club, where the exclusive fanparty was held. “You’re finally catching up to him, Yoochunnie,” Junsu said with a smile, although Yoochun could barely hear it over the beat.
“Finally catching up to him, huh,” Yoochun smiled to himself.
Yes, he’s finally there.
The moment he walked into the room, Jaejoong knew who he was. Perhaps it’s instinct, or maybe his alien antenna caught the wave. Maybe the world slowed down a little and the clock stopped turning, freezing everyone in place for a second. Maybe Hyunjoong’s annoying incessant flirting to the invited fangirls faded into the background somehow. Maybe Changmin was the one who nudged him that he turned his vision towards the door. Maybe, but he heard his voice. He knew that voice.
He almost dropped the martini on his hand, if it wasn’t Seunghyun who was quick to take it over. The toothpick from the olive over his drink that he ate earlier was still in his mouth, and he wondered if he should get rid of it. Yeah he should, and he threw it to Hyunjoong, because he can, making the other scream in disgust.
He saw someone handed Kai a drink, perhaps a friend, but he politely refused. As expected of him, Jaejoong smiled to himself, before he realized what he was doing. No, no, this is wrong. Kai thought Evie is a girl. He’ll hate him for sure!
Changmin suddenly came up behind him, “Go.”
Jaejoong tilted his head at Changmin.
“Go, hyung,” the maknae continued, “You’re the one he’s waiting for after all.”
Sipping the bitter liquor he had no idea the name off, Yoochun fidgeted. He watched how Junsu was quick to make friends. He himself had spotted each members of Mayhem, but damn, his heart was beating so fast, he couldn’t take it. He would love to greet each of them, ask for a picture and signature, but gosh.
Gosh, he’s making a fool of himself!!!
“You made it,” a familiar voice behind him said.
“Ev--” Yoochun turned around and the view that greeted him stopped his heart, his breath, his brain, his entire functioning body.
There stood the almighty Kim Jaejoong, hands on his ripped jeans pocket, and biting on his lower lip. He looked unsure, but Yoochun was more unsure. That voice he heard earlier…
“The ticket sold out so I couldn’t help you, but Seunghyun told me to just get you the pass,” Jaejoong continued, and that voice...THAT VOICE!
Yoochun gaped in surprise. Wha---WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?
“Changmin approved, so…” he then continued, with his own voice, the voice Yoochun had memorized through all Mayhem songs.
“Y--you--” Yoochun was stunned, “Evie?! How?!”
“I never meant to fool you,” Jaejoong looked down, a foot drawing circles on the floor.
Wow, Yoochun thought, how is it possible that the two people he had a crush on, are actually the same person?
Jaejoong rolled his tongue, pressing it to the wall of his cheek. He needed his lollipop, or nicotine patch, or 10 packs of cigarette. Kai is going to hate him, for sure, definitely, this is fraudulent conduct, and he is going to jail for it. Kai is going to hate him, he is---
He slowly looked up from the floor and at the person in front of him. Kai had his attention on the floor as well, with his slightly longer hair than Jaejoong fell over his face, but Jaejoong could still see it over the dim light. Red neck, red ears, red stained cheeks. Blushing?
“It’s Park Yoochun,” Kai said, voice so soft, only loud enough for Jaejoong to hear. “My real name is Park Yoochun,” he repeated, meeting Jaejoong’s eyes a bit.
Jaejoong could feel his mouth turning sour, his tongue felt like sandpaper. Something stuck on his throat, did he swallow a lollipop? An olive? The whole glass, perhaps? “You don’t hate me?” he couldn’t help but ask.
Yoochun turned away, hand over his mouth. Yes, his whole face was burning red.
If Yoochun doesn’t hate him, then it’s probably safe to do it, Jaejoong thought, chewing on his bottom lip. He pulled Yoochun’s hand away from his face and pressed a gentle kiss against the latter’s cheek
Yoochun turned into a goo and melted all over the floor.
Jaejoong tilted his head, oops wrong move?
“Can’t breath, I’m going to dieeeee,” Yoochun said, still crouching on the floor, arms covering his head. “This must be a dream, a dream, a nightmare? No, a freaking dream!”
He stared at Jaejoong, and slowly noted how a small smile spread over the older’s face. So it wasn’t a dream after all. He sighed and stood up, trying to not make a fool of himself this time. Jaejoong wouldn’t do such bold action if it doesn’t mean anything, right? Maybe, maybe he should too. Be bolder, be... “‘Her voice is like having a warm calming tea in one freezing day of January’, do you remember that?”
Jaejoong frown, confusion written all over his face, probably thinking what does his own lyrics has something to do with -- then his eyes rounded in surprise, “W-was that you?”
“6 years ago,” Yoochun nodded, more confident than ever after noting the blush that’s taking a home in Jaejoong’s face.
A small smile stretched his lips as Jaejoong looked away, not meeting his gaze. Now it was Jaejoong’s turn to melt into a goo. Biting his lip, Jaejoong glanced up at him "Jaejoongie does not usually write such corny lines, but isn't humans used to that?"
And Yoochun laughed, because he can. Because his first love is standing before him. Because it was always Kim Jaejoong all along, as vocalist of Mayhem or Evie the witch. Because he kissed him, he freaking kissed him first! Because Jaejoong remembers him, and he likes him back. Because Kim Freaking Jaejoong…
...kissed him again, not on the cheek but on his forehead.
Although it felt nice, he couldn’t help but frown at the kiss.
When he opened his eyes, Jaejoong was staring at him, head tilted at the side.
And Yoochun had to control himself from squealing. Fucking bias had the nerve to act cute in front of him! Jaejoong can’t be this…
...and something warm grabbed his sweaty cold hand, then there was a pair of lips touching the back of his hand. And God, the shivers that run through his entire functioning body.
But still, the feeling isn’t right...like something is missing, something like...and then he was pouting and Jaejoong looked utterly and adorably, panicked and everything just happened.
Soon, Yoochun was circling his arms around Jaejoong and… and really kissed him this time.

Sidestory:
Junsu felt a surge of joy watching his best friend like this, watching Yoochun catching up to his dream is like having accomplished something. He felt proud of himself, but more for Yoochun.
Smiling to himself, he turned around. “Hey,” Junsu slid into the bar, next to the tall, dark and handsome guy that seemed like he was hiding from the world. “Gin and Tonic,” he said to the bartender, before sitting on the tool next to the man. “Kim Junsu,” he offered his hand to the guy.
“Uh, Choi Seunghyun,” the guy replied, mumbling.
“Ah, you’re in Mayhem, I’ve seen you in Yoochun’s countless poster!” Junsu said carelessly, sipping on his drink.
“You’re not a fan?” Seunghyun asked, voice low.
“Nope,” Junsu shrugged, “You guys are okay though. I’ve heard Yoochun play your songs.”
“...Just okay?” Seunghyun sulked.
“I don’t care about such thing much,” Junsu shrugged, before turning to face Seunghyun. Now that he really looked at the man, he was handsome. Probably more handsome than the 10 (or was it 12?) guys he had dated before. “Aren’t you a little too good looking to be sitting alone at the corner of the club full of your fans in a fanparty your band hosted?”
“The fans come for Hyunjoong or Changmin. Jaejoong is way too weird. I’m not attractive.”
“You’re making yourself unattractive,” Junsu scoffed. “Hiding at the corner, wearing all black, no one can see you.”
Seunghyun turned to his black outfit, contemplating.
“I think you’re attractive, you shouldn’t hide it.”
Seunghyun stared at Junsu. Junsu was bright, attractive, confident. He has an aura that makes people want to stick around. “Can you...help me with that?”
Junsu emptied his glass and turn to Seunghyun with a grin. “Hm?”
Seunghyun bit the bottom of his lips.
Junsu found that quite adorable.
“Yeah, why not.”
