So, I've been participating in the Historical Sew Fortnightly hosted by Dreamstress.com.

The Challenges (thus far): ( (cut for a frankly stupid amount of costume porn and progress pics) )

Thanks! I came home from work tonight and got right to work on the overskirt for it. for Victorian it feels oddly plain. ;) The dress has got to live up to the hat.

The steampunk dress is lovely! I love the shaping on the top.

Thanks. It's the same pattern as the 1872 walking suit I made, but I hacked off the sleeves and re-did the bottom hemline to give it that smooth, rounded shape. I wanted to try to drop some of the bulky a bit lower on the hips instead of having these big pleaty bits starting at the waist. I'm so glad it's working.

Wow, just wow, those are gorgeous. Are you self taught? As someone who would love to do something like that but doesn't have the skills, I always wonder how folks came upon their magical crafting skills...

Mostly. I took a home ec class in highschool, but the teacher didn't like me much. I had a thing for not following directions. Some days I'm tempted to take a picture of one of my costumes and email it to her with the subject line "B minus that shit!" My mom and grandma were both sewers, and I suppose I just kind of grew up knowing it as something that people did and so I did it, too. I often just make it up as I go along, then find out years later either what something I've been doing all along is called, or, more often, that what I've been doing all along is the most complicated way possible of doing it.

Wow, you're so productive! killpurakat January 27 2013, 17:59:33 UTC
Yeesh, this is way more than I could do! And the things you have done look so pretty. :) You'll be posting pics of all the stuff that you will complete, right? (I'm such a glove fanatic, I REALLY can't wait to see those! If you need odd colored lightweight leather, I have some hot pink, sky blue, and mid-green I'd be willing to share.)

Likewise. And I have red and a bit of dove grey here.
