Don put his feet on the table and dialled the number. After a while a very
winded voice answered.
“Hello?”
“Colby?”
“Oh hey.”
“Why are you answering Chuck’s phone? And why are you out of breath?”
“You don’t want to know….”
“Fine, is my brother there?”
“Yeah, you want to talk to him?”
“Do you mind?”
“No. I could use a break. Wait a sec…”
Don waited and finally Charlie picked up the phone.
“Donny?”
“Still here. What the hell did you do to Granger?”
“I just enjoyed my vacation. You know…. hot sun, slippery suntan lotion,
a hammock for two…”
“Chuck, I got enough problems without the mental images.”
“Okay, I’m listening.”
“Dad called me.”
“And?”
“Now that you’re not around he wants to have some father-son time
with me. We’re having dinner at Vincent’s.”
“So what’s the problem?”
“I did something stupid, and I have no idea how this will go.”
“What did you do?”
“I told him I wanted to introduce somebody to him.”
“You mean Martin?”
“Yep.”
“Can you say you’ll introduce them, when they already know each other?”
“That’s probably not the point here, Chuck.”
“Right… Did you tell him that it will be a guy?”
“No, I thought one step forward was enough for one day. And dad didn’t
have a problem when you started dating Granger.”
“You even got one advantage compared to me and Colby.”
“I do?”
“Yeah. Dad had met Colby just once before. He knows Martin pretty well,
so that should make the whole thing go faster.”
“You think he’ll be fine with it?”
“I did the same thing with Colby, and you’re wondering about that?”
“Okay, I`m just nervous.”
“Relax. It`ll be fine.”
“I gotta go, I`ll talk to you later. But… one more thing.”
“What?”
“Don’t take this as an invitation to tell me in details what you’re doing
with Granger, but try to make sure he`s well enough to come back to
work after you two come back.”
“I promise nothing.” Charlie chuckled. “Bye.”
“Bye.”

Charlie’s cell phone started ringing again as soon as he had finished
the last call.
“Hello?”
“Charlie, it’s dad.”
“Hey, how’s everything?”
“Donnie finally made a move. He’s bringing company to our dinner today.”
“I heard. Bout time….”
“I know. I went for coffee with Martin yesterday and he was getting impatient.
And I’m an old man, it’s hard to remember who knows what, and who doesn’t
know something.”
“Yeah, I’ve had problems with that too.”
“So… let’s see if I got this right….” Alan took a deep breath. “Donnie’s dating
Martin, who used to date you. They got together after you got agent Cooper to
make a move on Donnie, instead of Megan, who is now seeing e-mail-Michael,
who she met thought a personal add you set up without telling her.” He paused
to breathe.
“Exactly.”
“That’s really confusing. Are David and that whatever-his-name-was still together?”
“Ian Edgerton. And yes, they are. They moved in together some time ago.”
“That’s nice. And I know you and Colby are doing well.”
“Very well.” Charlie grinned.
“Charlie…. I don’t think I’ve said it, but I’m glad you’re happy.”
“Thanks, dad.”
“And I’m even happier, that you’re happy with someone who can play golf.”
“Dad!” Charlie laughed. “You got something more to tell? I need to go and make
Colby happy. For the fourth time today.”
“That’s my boy.”
“Are you trying to traumatize me on purpose?”
“Would you believe me if I said no?”
“No.”
“Anyway, I need to go too. You two have fun.”
“We will. Bye.”
“Bye.”
“Who was that?” Colby asked, pressing his chest against Charlie’s back.
“My dad. Don’s finally telling him about Martin.”
“Bout time….”
“That’s exactly what I said. Everyone knows about it anyway. In this game you
really need to keep your eyes on the ball.”
“I thought you’ve retired from `the game`?” Colby wrapped his arms around
Charlie’s waist.
“I am.” Charlie sighed and leaned back against Colby. “Now I just do consultation.”
