Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Just after six in the morning Nick’s cell phone started ringing. He snapped
it open.
“Stokes.”
“Nicky? It’s mama.”
“Oh, hey… He couldn’t continue his sentence due to a jaw crackling yawn.
“Tired, honey? Were you sleeping?”
“No, I had last night off, but I couldn’t sleep.”
“Is something wrong?”
“Not really… just complicated.”
“I’ll interrogate you about it later. How`s Mikey?”
“He’s good.”
“Did he leave for work already, or is he still there?”
“He said he would come to get some new clothes before going to work.”
“What do you mean? I thought he was supposed to stay with you.”
“He stays here, but he had…” He paused to think a `mama suitable`
phrase. “..company.”
“What kind of comp-” Then realization dawned. “Oh. You mean…”
“That’s right.”
“I didn’t even know he was going to start dating again. Where did he
meet her? I mean him. I’m still trying to get used to that.”
“Me too. Anyway, I introduced them.”
“Do you think that was a good idea?”
“No. I mean, I never thought it would lead to this.”
“I’m not sure if it’s still too early for him to start dating again. Do think
it could get serious?”
“Hope not.” Nick sighed before he realized what his answer sounded like.
“Is the man that horrible?”
“He’s not. He’s a great guy, but not for Mikey. Those two have know each
other for two weeks, and in a month and a half he’ll move to San Francisco.
It’s a bad idea all around.”
“Well, if it doesn’t work out he’ll go to Frisco and that man stays in Vegas.
We better just wait and see.”
“I guess…”
“And honey?”
“Yeah…”
“Keep an eye on your brother for me.”
------------------------------------------------------------
“Are you awake?” Mikey hollered from the door and marched in.
“Yeah, and I got fresh coffee.” Nick offered.
“Great.” Mikey bounced to the kitchen, poured himself some coffee and
sat down. “Did you sleep well?”
“Not really. But you look like you didn’t get much sleep either.”
Mikey grinned and took a sip. “Yeah, but I’m not complaining.”
“Listen, can we talk before you go?”
“Okay, I got some news to tell you.”
“News about what?”
“Me and Greg.” Mikey was grinning again. “And it’s good news.”
“What is it?”
“Well… this probably sounds like I’m going too fast, but I’m pretty sure
I’m doing the right thing.”
“So, what are you doing?”
“Last night… I asked Greg to move to San Francisco with me.”
For a long moment Nick just stared at him with his mouth hanging open.
“You did what?”
“You heard me.”
“You asked him to move to san Francisco with you.”
“Yeah.”
“What did he say?” Nick asked carefully.
“He said he would think about it. That’s understandable, it’s a big decision.
But he didn’t seem too reluctant.”
“He didn’t?”
“No, and he would be closer to his parents. They live in San Francisco too.”
“I know.”
“What do you think?”
“Is he… I mean… Do you think he’ll do it?”
“I hope so.” Mikey glanced at his watch. “I gotta leave soon, what did you
want to talk about?”
“Nothing important, we can talk about it later. You better go, or you’ll be late.”
“Okay, I’ll be back after four.” Mikey swallowed the last of his coffee and left.
Nick stayed on his seat and stared at his mug. Greg had said he would think
about it. He hadn’t said yes, but he might…. Nick grabbed his phone and
selected a number.
“Hhhhhhmmmmmm?”
“Greg?”
“Why the hell are you calling me when I’m sleeping?”
“Sorry, I… I need to talk to you.”
“Fine. But be quick.”
“Not on the phone. Can I come to your place?”
“Why cant you say what you wanna say on the phone?”
“I can’t, believe me. I know I’m not exactly your favorite person right now,
but I really need to talk to you. Please.”
“Fine.”
“I’ll be there in half an hour.”
