Chapter 2: Deprived

“Wipe that smirk of your face, or I’ll do it for you.” Valera growled and slammed her mug against the table loud enough to snap Eric out of his daydreams.

“Did you say something?”
“No, just keep dreaming.”
“Okay.” Eric emptied his mug and got up for a refill. “Did I tell you that today’s the last day before my vacation?”
“Yeah.”
“Ten days.”
“Yeah.”
“We’re going to-”
“You and Ryan are going to leave the kid with our mom, spend a week in California enjoying the thrills of sun, sand, sin and restless man-love. You’ve told me. About two hundred times!”
“Really?” Eric was staring at her with his mouth open.
“Yeah! I’m happy some of us get to go on vacation and fool around like two horny teenagers but enough is enough!”
“Sorry.”
“Not your fault, it’s destiny.”
“DiCarlo?”
“What?”
“Destiny DiCarlo. She works in the cafeteria.”
“No, the real destiny. The big one. It should have been me.”
“What should have been you?”
“Think about it. You got a good guy and an adorable kid. Destiny meant those for me, but she has a really bad aim.”

“Right…. Are you gonna go all psycho on me now? Skin me alive and then craw into my skin?”
“Tempting, but no. I just wanna know one thing.”
“Shoot.”
“You’re going for a romantic trip, full of hot sweaty sex.”
“Definitely.”
“So why are you spending your vacation in Disneyland?”
“We found a hotel nearby, that has all rooms soundproofed so we can be as loud as we want.”
“And?”
“And we can check the sights in case we want to go there later with Ally.”
“And?”

Eric shrugged and looked embarrassed. “I’ve never seen Mickey Mouse live.”

-----------------------------------------------

“I’m gonna call the whole thing off.” Ryan groaned.

Calleigh gave him a long look from the passenger seat.
“Why?”
“It’s too early, I can’t leave Ally alone for a week.”
“You’re not leaving her alone.”
“She’s too young.”
“She’s six months old.”
“And she hasn`t been away from me longer than one day.”
“Eric’s mom knows everything there is to know about children, Ally will be just fine with her.”
“What if she wakes up in the middle of the night and she wont stop crying because I’m not there?”
“Ryan, for the last time: She’ll be just fine.”
“Yeah, but I don’t know if I’ll be.”

Calleigh pulled a water bottle from her bag and took a long swig. “Is that why you’re panicking? You don’t really worry about Ally, you’re worried about yourself.”
“I guess.”
“Why? And by the way, you were supposed to take the last turn left.”
“Shit… Sorry.”
“It’s okay, we can get some lunch on the way. So why are you panicking?”
“It’s gonna be just the two of us.”
“Shouldn’t that be a good thing?”
“It is. But we haven’t really been alone since I got Ally. We’re alone for one day or night when she’s with Eric’s family, but that’s not the same.”
“I don’t get it, you two are alone all the time at work.”
“Yeah, and it’s normal and comfortable and so on, but…. It’s weird to think that we’re gonna be just a couple together on a vacation. Not a couple with a kid. It feels different.”

“I think I know what you mean, and turn there if we’re going to All’s.”
“You want to go there?”
“Sure, I’m in the mood for Italian. You’re not really going to cancel the trip, are you?”
“No, I’m just…. venting. When I get it out of my system early, I wont start panicking when it’s time to get on the plane.” He paused to dig his cell phone from his pocket.

“Is it from the lab?”
“Yeah, but it’s not about the case.” Ryan parked the car in front of the restaurant and read the message. “Well…. Nice to know someone is really expecting the trip.”
“Is it something dirty?” Calleigh grinned.
“Borderline situation.” Ryan turned the phone so she could read the text message.
“Well…. I have to admit I had no idea you use thongs.”
“I don’t.”
“And the part about suntan lotion and nudist beaches?”
“Not gonna happen.”
“Awww… you’ll ruin his plans.”
“I don’t care. I can play dirty when we’re in our hotel room, but I’m not going to some nudist beach and….” He blushed furiously. “….and do that thing he writes about.”

“I wouldn’t do that either.” She agreed. “Especially on some public beach. Sand everywhere.”

-----------------------------------------------

Valera was about to walk out of the break room when Eric got an answer to his message. He clicked the text message open and bursted a mouthful of coffee all over the table.

“What was that?” Valera stared at him.
“I… it…. I got Ryan’s counteroffer.”
“Judging by that reaction it has to be something really juicy.”
“Hell yeah….”
“Show me!”
“Nope.” He quickly pocketed his phone. “It’s NC-100.”
