The Great Write Meme

Ok, so I thought it would be fun to do a little informal critique on each other's fiction. The idea stemmed from blessed_beast's The Icon Truth Meme, for icon makers.

THE GREAT WRITE MEME- Comment with your username, and those willing shall reply with thoughts on any fiction, fandom or original, that you compose. That means it does not make a difference what ( Read more... )

I like your stories a lot. I'm very into kink and I love your new series with the OCs.

I have a problem believing that Jethro would really be a dom with Tony or Abby as a sub. Jethro has so much responsibility and power in the real world that I think he would want to release his power to someone else. You have talked about why Tony might want to be a sub. I have no problem seeing Abby as a sub. I'm interested in finding out what you see in Jethro's character that would make him want to be 'the boss' in bed.

You are a very good writer. I don't comment a lot because I never feel like I have anything to add to what the other people say. I am happy that you write NCIS because there aren't many good writers in this fandom and you are one of the best fanfic writers I've ever read.

Thank you, for starters. And comments are always good, no matter what you have to say.

About Gibbs...okay. Being a sub, or being willing to sub for someone, is in large part a matter of trust. You have to really, really trust the person you're subbing for in order to give up that much control. And you have to be able to give up that control. With Gibbs, I think it's a combination of factors. I think that he's not really able to give up that control, because he can't get to that place mentally where it's possible. This isn't to say that it's completely impossible--it certainly is, and I've written fics where he has given up control to Tony before. But Gibbs is such an alpha, such a dominant personality, that I think he finds his pleasure in being that dominant for others. Gibbs takes care of his people, and to see Tony or Abby in his bed, willing to do anything he says--it's a combination of an incredible power rush and the pride at being able to take care of his people like this ( ... )

I love the way you use kink in stories - I've been following your writing since Firefly. If I have one worry spot, it's that of late you've been taking shortcuts in your sex scenes. So much of what you write is erotic, but you're not conveying how the participants feel - sensation, emotion, connection. Instead, the description feels perfunctory and I can't revel in the hotness as much as I'd like. There needs to be more good kinkfic around - you're is very good but could be better still.

Well, I'm glad you like the kink. I'm sorry that you think I've been taking shortcuts; it certainly hasn't been my intention to do so. Some of my fics *are* going to be less intense than others--the lemons aren't things I agonize over, for example. I do try to convey as much emotion as I can in the stories I write; that having been said, I don't always spell out every little detail because I like to leave a bit here and there up to the reader's imagination. If this makes my stories more perfunctory, I'm sorry, and I'll keep this in mind for the future.

Your writing intimidates me in that high school flashback kind of way. You know, seeing that kid who's so talented and makes it look so easy, the one who makes your voice shake when you have to talk to them even though they're just another kid who at the core is just as freaky and weird as you. Okay, maybe that was just my high school ( ... )

I hated those kids in high school--the talented ones. I was always the dork. :) And I certainly don't mean to intimidate anyone! I mean--compared to some writers out there, I'm just average. I've just always tried to improve, every time I write something.

Even the fics that could be called mediocre compared to the rest of your work are still amazing. The stories you note as being sort of off days or a stretch for you are the kinds of things I wish I could write, and that I wish more writers put into the world.I think some of the "off" fics tend to be stronger because they come from a place of frustration and depression or anxiety and I'm pulling from a place I don't normally go. It is ironic, the ( ... )

As much as I love your writing and the way you write the characters, the way you write kink, but you're too kinky. In the sense that almost every story is about bdsm and/or D/s. I wish you would write more about other stuff as well, a more vanilla kind of relationship. I like reading kink, but not all the time.

I'm sorry you think that. Unfortunately--I do write sometimes for other people, and I have been known to write what people want to read, but my strongest writing is what I want to see. And honestly, I like the kink. I like power plays, and the expression of dominance and submission, control and lack thereof. I don't think everything I write is about these themes, but certainly a large part of my writing is. I'm not likely to give that up. There are plenty of other writers out there who don't deal at all with kink or related themes; I'd recommend KSL or twoweevils for examples. Personally, I write what I enjoy reading, and I enjoy reading kink. I doubt that's going to change.

I understand that and I would never ask you to change that. I do love reading your stories and I love reading kink, but I'm obviously not as interested in it as you. You're a very good writer and we don't have many great writers in the NCIS fandom and I'm kind of selfish that I want you to write other types of stories as well.
