So yesterday's conversation had been... enlightening and Jacob couldn't quite help wanting to check up on Elena because of it. Besides, he hadn't seen her since graduation.

He knocked lightly on the half open door and stuck his head inside before an answer came. "Hey."

"Hey," Elena said, looking up with a quick nod. The smile didn't reach her eyes, but it was well-meant. "Haven't seen you in a while. Been busy with all the pretty girls?"

Well, there was an opening and he could either beat around the bush or just be upfront. "Depends if talking to your sister counts."

Elena was, hopefully, enough of a Turk that not much of that flinch showed. She sat up a little straighter.

"So you know how my week's been, then," she said, hoping it sounded light.

"Yo!" she chirped, leaning in the doorway. Absolutely no sign of her argument-talk with Zack from the morning in her face.

Nothing, actually, but bright eyes and mischief. "You busy, Elena?"

"Not especially," Elena said, closing her laptop and setting it aside. "Catching up on e-mails, that's what kind of day it is here."

Which was both true and entirely misleading, but she was okay with that.

"Fun," she said dryly, with a lift of her shoulders. "Then I guess you won't mind if I look adorable and ask for your help with something?"

Something very important! Really!

"Depends on what it is," Elena said, smiling, but entirely too cagey to promise otherwise. "The favor, that is. Feel free to look adorable all you want."
