So yesterday's conversation had been... enlightening and Jacob couldn't quite help wanting to check up on Elena because of it. Besides, he hadn't seen her since graduation.

He knocked lightly on the half open door and stuck his head inside before an answer came. "Hey."

"Hey," Elena said, looking up with a quick nod. The smile didn't reach her eyes, but it was well-meant. "Haven't seen you in a while. Been busy with all the pretty girls?"

Well, there was an opening and he could either beat around the bush or just be upfront. "Depends if talking to your sister counts."

Elena was, hopefully, enough of a Turk that not much of that flinch showed. She sat up a little straighter.

"So you know how my week's been, then," she said, hoping it sounded light.

"Know? No, but I can take a guess," he was just going to sit beside her on the bed. If she had problems with it, she could kick him off.

She didn't. Instead, she sighed, running a hand through her hair.

"It's ... complicated," she said. That was not even close to the extent of it, but it got the right mood across. "Do you have any brothers or sisters?"

Deflection! Handy.

He nodded, watching her carefully but not pushing. "Yeah, I've got two older sisters. Not that I see them much, they both left La Push as fast as they could."

"Is it a hellhole?" she asked. Not malicious, just curious. "We both got out of the slums as fast as we could. I can't blame her for that one. You see a way out, you grab it with both hands."

"No, just boring," he replied, not that he thought that was the reason.

"She left you there?"

Elena shrugged. "Didn't have much of a choice," she said. "I was seven, eight? Something like that. Dad was still alive, so it wasn't like I was standing on the street corner starving."

She was fighting the urge for a cigarette. Trying to cut back. Some.

"What's boring about La Push?"

"Nothing, there isn't a whole lot there," he shrugged.

"What happened when your father was gone?"

"I was a Turk by then, myself," she said. "Left home, didn't look back. He might still be alive, I guess. I never bothered finding out. Just figured he went down when Midgar did, like almost everybody else."

So much here that she shouldn't be saying. She wasn't sure if she cared.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly after a moment's pause. "I think it'd drive me crazy not knowing for sure."

Elena shook her head, offering him a quick, sympathetic smile. "Don't be," she said. "You're probably a lot closer to your dad than I was to mine."

"Still..." he shrugged and reached out to touch her shoulder. "What about your sister? Are you close?"

She leaned into the touch, slightly, but shrugged. "Yes? No? I don't know. We fight a lot, but that doesn't mean we're not."

See above in re: complicated?
