I seem to write in LiveJournal far less when I have less to complain about. I feel bad for that. But between life being on an upswing, supposedly for everyone I know - plus, you know, the move - it seems hard to find time to gripe about the nitty-gritty ( Read more... )

We run one of our games online, and have had a player or two telecommute in sometimes in the face-to-face game if they're out of town. It does work - we still have fun! - but it does have problems in our experience. In particular, it's harder for people to establish a "presence" or connection to everyone else when they're not able to read all their body language, which makes things a little more disjointed, and people get much more easily distracted since they're in front of a computer the whole time and that little "You're interacting with people, pay a socially acceptable amount of attention to them" switch doesn't always flip on in everyone's brains.

But it's definitely doable, so don't sweat it. It'll change a little, but the people you're playing with will still be themselves. :)

That's encouraging to hear. Thank you! :)

We had a player telecommute for (I think) several years, so I'm not inexperienced with it. We also have the benefit that our previous experience involved her calling in via a speaker phone, while we'll be doing this over video chat, which I think/hope will help.
I'm more hopeful about it than not, but I'm glad to hear others have been successful with it.
