Starling post

My little charges are doing very well. In the mornings, I put their cage outside on the balcony so they can talk to the other starlings in the neighborhood, who fly over and visit. In the afternoons they are now getting daily flight practice and learning to navigate a bit. Yesterday, I found a bloody flight feather on the floor so the navigation ( Read more... )

I am so glad they're doing well. Today I saw a mockingbird chick on the ground. He looked as though he was struggling so I went to help him. I managed to move him from the driveway curb to the mulch. He wasn't hurt and I was immediately attacked by his mom. He's still sitting in the mulch, but he looks better and happier and his mom is still harassing me any time I get anywhere near.

Mockingbirds do not play. It sounds like she's keeping an eye on him so I wouldn't worry too much.

Yeah, he's fine. He's fledged and he's learning to be a mockingbird. He looks great now - and he's happy and comfortable. When I first saw him, he was flattened out and looked in distress. I thought he'd hurt a wing, but when I got closer I realized he was OK. Really, he was just a bit stuck and I helped him get somewhere safe. Oddly, mama didn't really attack me when I helped him just after I got him someplace safe. I'm not worried about him, but mama has him in a place where I end up passing close by. She's not happy about that! It's funny because she'll be on the wire and then BOOM she's on the light post CAWKING. :D

I'm so glad you took them in! I don't care what anybody says, I love starlings and am always happy to see them outside my window.

I like them too, even though the little bastards steal the dry food from my feral cat colony. I also love their song.

I'm so glad they're doing well! It's great that you're able to introduce them a bit at a time to the great outdoors.

Thank god for the internet. Without it I wouldn't have known they need to be eating on their own, be exposed to the outdoors and to have had at least two weeks of flight practice before being released.
