What's the issue with sodium laureth sulfate?

It's awful for curly haired people. It's also the cleansing agent in most shampoos. Most people get by using it but it's what causes friz and dryness for people with curly hair. When I stopped using shampoo and started cleansing with conditioner or no poo type cleansers my hair improved greatly. SLS strips the moisure from my hair and makes it coarse, brittle, dry and frizzy.

Thanks. I'm having some hair damage problems and maybe that's why.

There are a few companies that make non SLS products. Oyin makes a no-poo shampoo bar and Devachan, who has a whole system to care for curly hair, has no-poo and lo-poo shmapoos. I'm sure you can find others. I can recommend personally the ones I mentioned. I've found that washing my hair and scalp with conditioner (co-washing) is enough. I do it daily and my hair is soft and shiny now, whereas before it looked like hay and felt like brillo. It took about 2 weeks for my scalp to get used to the absence of shampoo but after that my hair was not greasy and my scalp wasn't itchy.

Exactly and I knew you'd get it. It sucks too because I like the color and it is not as caustic as other brands, no ammonia, and it's cheaper. But damn, when it started to lather as I rinsed it out? I was not happy. I spent the next hour with my hair deep conditioning and it doesn't look bad now but I am so not pleased.
