Visually, having the lighting being so harsh and the color palette so bleached and yellow was kind of neat and different from every generic horror remake or sequel getting made these days, it's just a shame they forgot to include any of that "plot" or "character" or "worthwhile storytelling" stuff. I guess the director will work on that next time, maybe, if he can remember to.
There is a plot, characters and worthwhile storytelling. Just because there wasn't a scene entirely shot in slow motion with The Kinks or David Bowie playing in this film doesn't make it not worthwhile.
I thought The Hills Have Eyes 2 wasn't as bad, because I didn't care about the characters at all. I felt very sympathetic for the family in the first film, but the soldiers in the second didn't have any depth whatsoever, so I didn't mind them dying.
