Honestly, the only reason I have any interest in seeing this movie is because of your flailing about i, for the exact reasons you mention at the beginning. After all the weird "must market for boys" drama, I was pretty annoyed with the project before I had even seen any footage of it, and the teasers and trailers that followed didn't do much to change that. But you have convinced me to go see it after all :D
I agree with everything you've said here, though I think Donna Murphy's Broadway singing voice is pretty out of place with the rest of the singers.
Stunning visuals, timeless humor, sentimental moments (King Daddy! King Daddy!). This film has it all except totally amazing music but hey, it's better than The Princess and the Frog's songs.
I actually thought Mandy seemed out of place. Donna and Zachary, like most everyone who has sung for Disney and other animated films (Lea Salonga, Liz Callaway, etc.), come from a Broadway background. That's the kind of vocal talent I always expect from a film like this.
I totally, totally agree with you about the trailers. The only one I saw made me think the movie was going to be lame. That line about not being able to get Flynn's nose right always fell flat for me.
I loved the animals too - and even more, I think, because they didn't talk. Do you think they took a tip from Wall.E?
I was actually astonished that Disney HADN'T made "Rapunzel" into a film sooner.
Answer me this - does the prince go blind at the end? Does it stay true to that aspect of the fairytale? (Well, Rapunzel heals his sight later, but the witch blinds him with thorns.) Or does Disney pull a hokey Little Mermaid on us and cut out all violent, aka interesting, aspects of the original story?
Well, he doesn't go blind, but it's not entirely white-washed. There's some violence at the critical turning moment, if that makes you feel any better.
He hasn't been hiding his singing talent, but he certainly hasn't been advertising it enough! I guess he doesn't have a lot of opportunuties for it on Chuck, which is a shame.

You can see him singing here in a duet with some woman I didn't know before she did this with Zach: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un60RISzE-A
