Farewell, Marvin Hamlisch

Aug 07, 2012 10:51

Sadness. Composer Marvin Hamlisch, one only two people (the other being Richard Rodgers) to win a Grammy, a Tony, an Oscar, an Emmy and a Pulitzer Prize, has passed away at the age of 68.

What's your favorite Hamlisch music? It's not exactly fair to say The Sting, because of course that was heavy with Scott Joplin. I really do like his Bond ( Read more... )

A Chorus Line has its moments, though it's not one of my favorite musicals.

Despite that it's an adaptation of Joplin, I plan to screen The Sting tonight, in memoriam.

I've heard the entire Chorus Line soundtrack. There are enough tracks there that I enjoy. Funny thing is, he also did the original theme for "Good Morning, America" back when it started.

A Chorus Line is one of my all-time favorite stage musicals (note the adjective - the movie version is an abomination). On stage, it always makes me choke up. I've parodied one of the songs - "Dance Ten, Looks Three", aka the "Tits and Ass" number.

Hamlisch's final work, the stage musical version of "The Nutty Professor" just opened in Nashville, and appears to be getting some good reviews. (The book is by Rupert Holmes, and the production is, no kidding, directed by Jerry Lewis.)

I agree - I adore A Chorus Line (the musical). Was on a backstage crew for a community production of it and can still recite most of the lines and lyrics. I actually hadn't realized he'd written it but can absolutely see his style in it.

I wore out two vinyl copies of The Sting in my youth. It's music that never fails to make me smile.

I will always love his work "they're playing our song."

Chorus Line is great. What I loved about him was he used to get people in the audience to give him words or phrases and then write songs using them on the spot. He was one of the greats.
