Steve Benen notes a huge problem that the Democrats have running against Republicans, especially Mitt Romney: People simply can't believe that what the Dems are saying could possibly be the truth

Think Progress and Daily Kos are good. For more general news, I will go look at google and yahoo, then at bbc and sometimes A-Jz. I will also check slashdot for tech/science/geek news, as long as I can wade through the rather rare atmosphere that sometimes rises from the comments. Huff Post is also good.. and don't forget cracked.com...
And yet, I was talking to a friend of mine, who is normally a perfectly reasonable person. And she said, "But now I'm torn between having to vote for a Mormon or a Muslim."
When I pointed out that Obama isn't a Muslim, she said that he isn't American.
Now, she's been living in Salt Lake City for two years, and has been bombarded with -- stuff -- but I was kind of in shock.
Apparently, people can readily believe that President Obama is a non-American, Muslim Terrorist, Communist, Fascist, Dictator, but they can't believe that Romney has anything other than the general public's best interests at heart.
Senator Sanders is a great source. I follow his twitter, too.
I have to give Fox News/Republicans credit. They're very good at messaging. This is one area that Democrats have failed at time and time again. They pick a lie to sell, and they sell it. The media is liberal? YUP! Health care bill is horrible for you and your families? Yup. Obama is a Muslim who was born in Kenya? Of course.
I had that discussion with my mother. I told her he'd been a member of Trinity Church of Christ for two decades. Her immediate response, I kid you not, was "Oh, he's Mormon too?"
Apparently the RLDS church took to calling themselves Community of Christ recently and she had confused the two.
I'm a big fan of Maddow, and if you're not watching "Up With Chris Hayes" on the weekend, you're missing one of the best panel discussion shows on the air.
For one-stop political news, Talking Points Memo is great. It manages to walk the same line between admitted leftist bias while maintaining a core of journalistic integrity.
I had to stop reading Daily Kos because, while many fine people do drop their pennies in the jar there, the overall tone is far too strident for my taste.
I also get first looks or excellent commentary on most issues from the crew at Balloon Juice (John Cole, ex-wingnut, proprietor, is one of the most right on writers out there), Charles Pierce at Esquire, and Digby and David Atkins (thereisnospoon) at Hullabaloo.
Hmm. Trusted sources. My most trusted source is Bill Moyers, who is excellent. I should note that we watched clips from Moyers' new show during my Political Sociology class on several occasions this past semester. Several authors of good popular analysis books (popular as opposed to academic) have been on his show. When you strain out the sarcasm, I like Bill Mahar, Jon Stewart, and Stephen Colbert. Yes, analyses can be funny. For websites, I am fond of FactCheck.org and Politifact. For journalism sources, I like Mother Jones and The New York Times, though I mostly go to the Times for Paul Krugman. I'll check out bbc.co.uk from time to time, and listen to NPR in the car. Every now and again I'll check out Digby or Media Matters.

So as you can see, I barely touch the news :P
