First things first: The planetary gear did something or other, and it damaged the gear case. Replacing the old transmission with a rebuilt one will cost $2,960 plus tax, which is more than I paid for the van originally

I'm so glad things are looking up. I was working at Anthrocon all weekend, and got back last night. I had a great time, but it'll take a couple of days to fully recover from the exhaustion.
My favorite sight of the con: A six foot tall walrus, wearing a monk's robe and tonsure, boogieing down the hallway to the strains of "Dancing Queen".
Things I overheard at the con:
"I'm the king of TMI."
"I'm a dog! I bark at anything that moves. And if it doesn't move, I'll probably pee on it."
Things I actually said at or coming home from the con:
A moment's silence for Garnet followed by Adam Sandler's song "Ode to My Car" (the version from Dr.Demento which is way funnier than the original).
Sorry I haven't been here much to help but it's been interesting for me too. I really hope everything works out so you can get to the places that you need to go. Drive safe and stay sane.
I'm not sure if this will cheer you up, but I accepted an offer to go full time where I've been working as a consultant for 6 months now. The pay is comparible once you factor in the paid holidays and vacation time.
I'm not in a spot where I can give any help, so I'll comment on the fact that this old vehicle had been named Garnet. When I was working for HealthPartners at their Skyway clinic, the morning transcriptionist (with whom I shared a work station, as I worked afternoons) was really, really impressed with Garnet Rogers. I also knew that she (Joan) very rarely drove to work, but did so occasionally. One day while walking toward the clinic, I saw a parked car with the vanity plate GARNET. I asked Joan if this was her car. She said it was not. I guess I could always have left a note saying, "If you are a fan of Garnet Rogers, please give Joan and/or me a call, and maybe the three of us can go to a concert together." But it just did not seem to be worth the effort, and so we will never know.
