I prefer the second picture, but (assuming you have a larger original) I'd zoom and crop it more closely so the picture was about 20-30% larger than it is. (Mostly, I'd trim the tabletop from the left and top segments of the pic and maybe lighten it by 5-10%.) That would make it easier to read "Passport" and see the eagle below, plus identify the currency for what it is.
Both images project the message "wad of stuff" and I would only figure travel when I squinted and saw the word "passport." If you are going to use those props, I suggest zooming way in, so that the bottom 2/3 of the image is the passport, with the word "passport" and the seal easily visible, and with bits of money across the top third. Better done on a scanner than a digital camera.
Heck, just the top half of the passport alone would be better, I think.
