If I wasn't bringing my ham radio gear I could get all my clothes into a small carry-on and then check the guitar (don't give me that look; I check my guitar all the time when I fly. The case is battered

Hah, not so much. There's only one guitar shop in town.

However, it's more that they have a limited stock and the prices aren't necessarily the best.
