A question from the baffled German: why on Earth would anyone specifically want to watch the commercials? Are Super Bowl commercials somehow super special or something?

It's one of the single most-watched nights of TV in the US (possibly even the single most-watched night) with the most expensive advertising costs -- a 30-second spot costs $3,500,000 or more (so about of 2.600.000 €). There's even news coverage and analysis of the commercials in the newspapar and office talk is more likely to be about the commercials (and halftime show) than about the game itself (which is, from what I understand, usually dull).
Most regular TV commercials suck, but the Super Bowl ones are...less sucky.

But then, there are whole TV shows about "the funniest commercials of the world" on German TV (or used to be, anyway - I haven't checked in a long while), and I don't feel any inclination to watch these, either, so I just might be the wrong target audience. :-P
