I'm actually really enjoying watching World Cup here. I mean, I watch World Cup when it's on but generally am indifferent to sports in general. But being here in England means that there's a lot of excitement around it. It's very different than big sporting events in the US. It's everywhere here and for the most part, people want to watch the actual game (seriously. All the Super Bowl parties are great, but most people are there to watch the commercials.)
Both of yesterday's matches were really exciting. The Australians really played well against Netherlands, and even though they lost 3-2, they were tied for most of the match (and given how well the Dutch play, that's quite a feat.) The Spain-Chile match was magnificent. Chile played really well and Spain, the reigning world champions, didn't. 2-0 Chile, in an entirely deserved win. I thought that they might even get a 3rd goal in the 6 minutes of stoppage time, which really would have been salt on the wound.
Tonight is England vs. Uruguay. This is a make-or-break match for England; if they lose then they go home. There's a big screen set up in the Canada Square right here in Canary Wharf; I'm sure it's going to be a zoo and I'm really looking forward to it!
