The thing is, Dean starts seeing Sam. Not like, seeing Sam, because Sam is in a fucking hole in the ground and Dean gets that, he does. But there are times, you know? Like the one where Dean was at the grocery store, and he caught lanky legs and too long hair in the corner of his eye.
It's a ghost, obviously. Not Sam's ghost, because 1) Sam fucking knows better than to haunt Dean and, 2) Dean spent enough of his life as a hunter to know the difference between supernatural ghosts, and ghosts of the mind.
So he goes about his business. He lives with Lisa who, really, is the best girl in the entire universe. She's so much more than Dean deserves. First three months, he barely talks. Just sits around her house, broods and glowers and then takes off in the Impala for fucking weeks at a time. He doesn't do much on these excursions. He basically eats up highways at reckless speeds until he's so lost he has to turn back, ache deep in his belly for a shotgun whose seat is still empty.
He finally gets a fucking pick-up. He gets a job and throws out all his flannel shirts and devotes his Saturdays to figuring out how to get the grass that perfect shade of green.
Dean Winchester has the normal life he's always wanted. And he's miserable.
