From my recent experience, you should be able to go into a bank, open an IRA, and roll over your 401k into that IRA with no penalties or losses from the IRS. That's money that should be in your control, not remain with your employer, and a bank (or credit union, whatever) should be able to help you open the account and figure out how to manage it properly for your needs.
I'm so sorry. I know how much getting fired sucks, even from a job you hate (been there. twice.). But you will get through it, and you will get something better!
