Severus was in a hurry. Granted, he was always in a hurry, or at least made good show of appearing as such, so as to avoid being accosted by those seeking casual 'chit-chat'. However, in this particular instance, he really was in a hurry. He was working on the silver chelation potion, as he had mentioned to Lupin just after the Leaky attack, and had decided to alter one of the ingredients from dried holly berries to fresh ones, and now had less than five minutes to get the newly acquired berries into the cauldron, else this attempt, and the berries in his pocket, would be ruined.

Sweeping over the lawns from the green houses toward the back of the castle, Severus had nearly attained the concealed door which led directly into his dungeons, and would open only for him - a concession of Albus' during the war which Minerva had permitted to remain. Unfortunately, he came across an obstacle in is path. One which could neither be ignored nor blasted out of his way!

A sobbing infant with a broomstick was bawling in front of his doorway ( ... )

Wini had only seen this man once. It had been frightening at that time, even with Da to cling to. Now the man was in front of her, taking a different tone, but still looking scary. "Da..a..aaa.." she said helplessly, her eyes brimming with tears again as she tried to keep away from him. But, then again, this man seemed to be her only hope. She went into his arms, letting out another whimper.

She started blubbering again, sniffling and wiping her nose with her hands when he moved the handkerchief. "Daa..a..." she moaned again. "Daaaaa..." she looked at Snape, her bottom lip trembling. She'd lost Ma, and now somehow she couldn't find Da. It was very disconcerting to this little two year old. Da would come back, wouldn't he? She didn't want to live with Nana and Papa...

"B'oom," she said, once Snape had picked her up, wiping her eyes and pointing to her toy broom. "B'oom! Mine." She clung at his robes once she had said this, however, deciding that it was more pleasant to burry her face in them instead of looking at him.

How did he get himself INTO these situations? The child wrapped herself around him, limpet-like, and buried her face against his robes, sliming them with at least two different bodily fluids in the process. He slung his arm around her and settled her against his hip so easily that one would not have believed it to have been nearly twenty years since he last carried a weeping toddler anywhere.

She wasn't quite as blonde as Draco, but it seemed that weeping two-year-olds had many similarities regardless of parentage.

With a put-upon sigh, he picked up the broom as he stood, handing it to her.

"There. I've got you, and your broom, and we will find your father."

Or June. Or the Head Girl. Or any of the female school Prefects - anyone who could safely transport the child to Wood with as little inconvenience to himself as possible ( ... )

She sniffled the whole way to the dungeon, little mewing cries against Snape's robes as she wondered whether he was taking her away from her Da forever. She made a few wet spots against his black robes, her little body trembling as she cried. But, slowly, as they continued towards his dungeon, her sobs began to subside. It was a lot of work for a little two year old to keep up crying for so long, and she seemed to give up. As he moved her to watch the potion, she rubbed her eyes with her hand, letting out just one last little sniff ( ... )

The Search for Wini mroliverwood October 4 2006, 05:36:29 UTC
Practice had ended beautifully. The Chasers were doing well, and the Seeker -- Well, the Seeker wasn't a Harry Potter, of course, but he was... Perhaps, A Charlie Weasley, Oliver thought, studying the boy's frame. Wini, of course, would be a better Seeker than Harry. Or Krum. Or anyone. She'd be Seeker of the Year -- and never for the Harpies. He started day dreaming a bit as he blew the whistle for the team to gather around him. If he could stay in the Pros long enough to be able to work with Wini on Puddlemere.... Well, that would be wonderful. His chest puffed out with pride. The Wood family. The first family of Quidditch. Yes, yes. That was it ( ... )

Remus had, indeed, been watching the last few minutes of practice. Having dimissed his last class of the day, he had found himself distracted by the view of the practice he had from his office window and decided to leave off the marking he had to do until after dinner and wander down to see how Wood was fairing with the team. He had noted the toys scattered to one side, but had assumed the absence of a child with them must mean she was with a minder, perhaps making use of one of the girls' lavatories in the school ( ... )

Oliver's heart was beating in his chest so bad he thought it was going to break. Wini -- where the hell could she have gone to?

Remus' words hardly made sense to him. He tried to focus, watching as the Professor sent students different ways. He pressed his hand against his head, demanding his mind to work - to understand, to plan.

When had he last seen Wini? Had he checked on her enough during the practice? He had gotten caught up in the team, and... I'm a terrible father, he thought. More and more it seemed obvious that he needed to leave Wini with his mum.

"Dunno," he finally said to Remus, taking in a deep breath. "I'm not sure when I last checked on her. Twenty minutes ago? She shouldn't have been able to go anywhere... And, her... Her broom is gone, so she could be..."

Anywhere.

"Would be carrying... or, ah, being carried on her broom... Little blue dress... she..." He closed his eyes. "Gotta... Gotta find her before..." Nothing else mattered anymore. He tried to take deep breaths, keep from panicking ( ... )

Wood was silent for so long, Remus began to fear the young man had gone into shock. An understandable reaction upon realizing one's daughter has vanished from under one's nose -- but wholely unhelpful in the moment when information and speed were of the utmost importance in finding her. After all, Remus did not know how much Wood had explored of the Hogwarts grounds during his school days, but Remus knew quite a bit about what dangers were out here for a two year old child ( ... )

Oliver made his way down to the dungeons as though there was a troll behind him. He had been calling, "Wini!" the whole way down. He reached the door of the dungeon, and threw it open. "June? June!" he called. "Is Wini here?" He was about ready to just turn and leave. After all, Snape had told him that he was not supposed to come down to the dungeon for any reason. But he had to see if Wini was here, and --

There she was, leaning relaxed against Snape's robes, her little head in the crook of his arm.

"What the hell?" He shouted.

"Da.." said Wini sleepily, smiling at him from Snape's arms.

"What the Bloody HELL are you doing with my daughter?" said Oliver. He wanted to grab her, but he was frozen at the sight of his daughter curled up in Snape's arms.

The door burst open just as Severus was worrying that he wouldn't be able to drag out his one story long enough. The child was nearly asleep, and though he would never have admitted such a thing to a living soul, he had even allowed himself to run his jaw along the top of her head, so that the downy-soft hair tickled against his chin.

His arms tightened in a protective instinct around the child at the ruckus occurring in his doorway, as a veritable parade of people stormed into his dungeons ( ... )

When she realized that Snape was about to let her go, Wini clung to his robes for a minute, in something sort of like a hug -- though she wasn't in the right sort of position to be able to hug as easily as she'd like, she tried. "Po'tin," she said dreamily as she was put into her father's arms ( ... )

Severus would have liked to sneer or scowl or even rage at Oliver Wood at that moment, but there were two large, sleepy blue eyes still blinking up at him which prevented it. She had hugged him, just before he placed her in her undeserving father's arms, and it had been that much harder to let her go.

Still, he spoke through tightly gritted teeth as he fought to keep his voice calm and level so as not to distress the child.

"Do you see any students here, Wood?" he asked acidly. "Do you fancy me to be the sort to entertain the intrusion of house-elves into MY private lab when I am working? Do you suppose chasing after you because YOU could not keep track of your offspring takes precedence over MY research? I am in the midst of a very delicate potion which had to be tended to with careful precision, lest the work be lost.

"I have five minutes left before it will be completed, at which time I intended to find some poor blithering idiot to send off to look for you, as there are clearly some times when 'it takes one to know one' is ( ... )
