But first, before the dancing could begin, the Headmistress would address the crowd. )

Aberforth, as he’d insisted Seamus call him, very nearly threw him out of the bar, saying the crowds were thin, and he’d tend his own bar in his own way and Seamus could hike himself off to Hogwarts or anywhere else for that matter until his shift the next day.
Reluctantly, Seamus changed into his dress robes and headed off towards the castle. He was determined to have a few drinks, dance with Lavender and leave ( ... )

Well, there didn't seem to be a second reason.
So, it was for Hogwarts and Hogwarts alone that she attended, because really, Luna was in no mood for a party. Still, she'd found a nice dress and accompanied on her father's arm... which felt like quite a change. There should have been someone else there ( ... )

There was certainly a air of discomfort around, but Lavender had no idea why. She unconciously let her hand rest on Seamus' arm while sipping her drink. "What have you been up to?"

She was healthy and she lived in her own home, with her own money. So of course, Hermione was happy as well and happy people didn’t avoid big social events. Because there was nothing wrong with her, she’d made the choice to separate herself from… Certain people, but that didn’t mean she would be avoiding social events, not at all. So she’d gone out and found the dress that was least like her. Standing in front of the mirror she’d hardly recognised herself in what had been made for her. It was still classic and classy but showed more skin and more curves than anything else she’d worn ( ... )

A warm hand wrapped around her wrist and she turned to him, a relief and calmness that had become almost unknown in her chest arrived as she recognised him.
Remus. There was no lies that she could tell to the honest face, no emotions she could hide while she was feeling so weak. But she had to build herself up, because harsh times called for harsh actions. Hermione could hide deep in the depths of her eyes, shielded by blush and potions and crammed deep inside a finely crafted black and white dress ( ... )

Neville couldn't quite tell, but he thought that Luna was acting a bit odd. He'd only asked after Seamus because he knew they were friends and co-workers. It made complete sense to him at that moment, but now he wasn't so sure.
He shot a bewildered look at Lavender when she tried to speak to him behind her drink. Did she say to ask Luna to dance? That's what it sounded like, but in the festive din of the Great Hall, Neville didn't trust his ears. He still felt a bit worried about Luna, and she wasn't acting quite like herself. Neville knew that for certain.
"Um, Luna? Are you alright? You look a bit..." He paused, searching for the right, tactful word to say. "A bit off."

Times like now.
"Yes, a full hour ago," she said, shoulders and arms stiffening. If she were a cat, her fur might be standing on end. "I think that's long enough for one person to lose track of another, don't you? I'm not his keeper."
She didn't hear what Lavender whispered to Neville and didn't much care. But when Neville spoke to her she fixed him with a gaze that was too affected to be considered annoyed. It was just surprised... and hurt.
'A bit off'? He thought she was a bit off?Well... perhaps she was. But she didn't need it pointed out ( ... )

And she was gone.
"Oh, Neville," she sighed, finishing her drink and putting the cup into a house elves' eager hand. "Hexes and jinxes, I gave you a whole list of adjectives. And you choose 'off.'" She closed her eyes and put her face in her hand. She didn't even care if her gesture of frustration made him uncomfortable right now. He had just gone and ruined something that could have been tame and interesting. If he did this with Luna Lovegood, who was supposed to be a friend of his -- Hexes and JINXES! he really needed a hufflepuff. The tamest Hufflepuff in the world. Someone who would peep out "yes'ms'" and "No'ms" to "Gran" and spend the rest of her time cultivating the earth with Neville ( ... )

Was it because of the changes concerning the Hogwarts houses? Or was she just not feeling well? Or had something happened to Seamus, and Luna worried for him? Too many questions, not enough answers, and Neville caught right in the middle. He wanted to do Lavender right by trying to follow her advice; they were Gryffindors together, after all, but...
"Well," Neville sighed. "What do ladies want to hear, then? I don't think most blokes know that. Seems to be the most difficult thing to suss out."

He held himself rigidly straight, shoulders proudly squared - he was Head of Slytherin House and owed no one here any particular deference.
"Good evening, Miss Bell," Severus greeted politely as she passed by the area he was presently standing. "I understand you have organised the Exhibition Game? Quite an undertaking, I am certain."

"You are quite correct, far more work then I originally anticipated, but ticket sales and the money that it will gain for the school makes it more then worth the hard work. In addition, Quidditch can use the good press." she added, "I hope that I will see you there, somewhere Professor. Rumor has it that you yourself will be heading Slytherin house again. I suppose congratulations are in order."

He didn't hesitate to use Legilimency when he felt the situation warranted it, of course, such as when he felt his life was in danger or he was being lied to by a miscreant student or the like.
However, his line of work had necessitated him being very adept at 'reading' people - sometimes his very life had hung on his ability to read a mood, a look, to know when a hex was coming his way.
He needed no Legilimency now. It was impossible to miss the brief look of disgust or distrust or whatever it was that passed Miss Bell's expression before she concealed it. Clearly Mr Wagtail's efforts at improving his 'look' carried little weight with most people - as Severus had expected. A change of shampoo, a haircut, and a teeth-whitening charm did not change the fact that he was a sadistic bastard most of the time - nor that he enjoyed that reputation far too much to try to spoil it ( ... )

Tonks gritted her teeth as she and Charlie wandered into the busy area, where dancing and party like conversations mingled hand in hand. With her left arm looped around Charlie’s arm, she squeezed at his forearm with her hand in playful meanness. Charlie had mentioned, as they walked in, that they were right on time, but it was evident that was not the case. Even if it was her fault that they were so late, that shouldn’t matter anyway.
What was worse than tardiness, was the dress she got stuck with on her wild goose case to find something for the dance, two hours before it was to start! That was not enough time for picky Tonks, who had set on finding a suit, and found the lavender dress instead. Shops in Diagon had been hit hard because of the event, so it was that or nothing. It was the only thing that fit her decently ( ... )

He should be one upset, really. Not only was he dressed formally, he'd been forced to go shopping. "A drink, I think, is just what we need. --Ha." Charlie started to steer Tonks in a different direction- so they could look for the 'bar'. He laughed and appeared innocent. "I might be delighted."

"Would you just let me whine, please?" She finally retorted when they stopped their weaving, and ended up at one table. Tonks sighed deeply and brushed back her straight purply hair. "You might get a bloody nose... how does that sound?" She gently elbowed him in the ribs, before slipping her arm away from his.
"You should be happy, and thankful I said yes. That's the least you could do."
