x-men: the last stand.... until the next one

May 27, 2006 22:58

i saw x3 last night with humpstar, charlotteann, and our friend steph. it was really good to get out and actually interact face-to-face with people that i'm not related to for the first time in a while. i also managed to run into princessem and ken, who were there to get tickets to the same show as us. unfortunately, they were sold out, so emma and ken went home (sorry!), but ( Read more... )

hey, no worries about the seating thing. the guy i sat next to was very nice and chatted with me before the movie started. :)
also, i'm pretty sure i've got back my old job at ghazis (or cedar as it is now called) for a couple days a week and i still have my job with university advancement. so things are a-o-k.
when did you run into emma? before i showed up?

but the plot discrepancies between the film and comics were enough to drive a marvel reader to drink.

haha... yeah... the movie made me drink... but i think i have to see it again... like it had some awesome set pieces... but other than that... ugh... i need another beer...

as long as characterizations are essentially faithful to their inspirations, comic movie storylines that deviate from those established in the source material don't much bother me. i can appreciate them as an interpretation, instead of picking them apart like a rabid fanboy. that being said, characters are something that should be easy to translate from comic to film... so why the fuck wasn't collussus russian??

and Pyro wasn't Australian... but anyways... the thing that really bothered me the most was that the Phoenix wasn't faithful to her character in any medium of the comic... she just seemed like a super-powerful thug to Magneto... it makes me sad to see that Fox wouldn't wait for Singer's X3/X4 back-to-back movies...

yeah if you read my review,I said the same thing about the phoenix, that was my biggest dissappointment. The most powerful mutant on the planet and she didn't really do that much

she didn't do much?? she disintegrated one of the most powerful mutants on the planet just by thinking at him... not to mention basically an entire island, and half the mutants on it.

i think her level of power was apparent.

the only real difference i could see (besides the physical manifestation of the phoenix) was that she was obviously having trouble completely supressing the jean grey persona, which she didn't have as much trouble with in the comics, because eventually it was revealed that phoenix wasn't actually jean grey.

What I really liked about the first movie was the subleties. When Xavier is talking and they're touring the campus I totally nerd out. You get to see Brightwing and stuff. I agree with you that it's not important to stick so closely to the plot as long as you stay true to the characters. If you think about it, how many times has history been rewritten in a comic to incorporate something new that didn't fit with the past. From what I've heard Phoenix was a tragic portrayal though. I mean you've got destroyer of worlds and then you've got two bit thug for the big M. Even Madelyn Prior was a bigger bad ass than that and she was just a clone of a clone.

Nonetheless, I will sit here in flustered anticipation while I await the day when I can actually see it.

a.k.a. the day when you can drag sunny out of the house again? :p the fact that she was out of the house last weekend was probably damn near miraculous... i'm not sure i'd push yer luck. heh.

and i agree with the subtleties... it's always great to see directors/writers having fun with a movie, and sticking in those little details just for the fankids to geek out too. those sorts of things are one of the reasons i still watch smallville... a name-drop here, a foreshadowing there... and everytime i see one, it reminds me of that special group of dorks i'm a part of. :p

I unfortunately never got into the main stream DC comics so I miss a lot of what happens in Smallville. It's still a good show though. I read X-Men religiously from about 85 until 2003 when Wes was born and then I ran out of spare cash for comics. I was doing the comic torent thing for a while, but it's just not the same.

And while I think there are much better characters and stories than Wolverine has to offer, I do hope the go in that direction with the franchise rather than just let it die.

yes! we went yesteray to the matinee. i was a little bit disappointed, i think the 2nd one was better. i haven't read the comics or anything, but i thought phoenix kinda sucked, and there could have been more story to it. oh well :)

yeah... it was adequate, but not really blow-your-socks-off awesome.

i think another 20-30 min of character development/origins and other such coolness could've done wonders for it.
