I love his memories of the kiddy pool, being bathed by Mary, and splashing with Sam. Those are beautiful images.
now and then, he wonders if it's all an illusion, something that's being fed to him by someone far more powerful than he is. Something that could burst, suddenly, like a soap bubble.
Wow, that line hurt a lot more than it should have. In the midst of all that peace and beauty . . . that such a thing would even come to Dean's mind is . . . ouch. He's been through way too much. Poor Dean.
And you know, when you got to the "raft" part, I couldn't help but think of a certain Stephen King story involving just such a raft. Had me all worried that you'd go down that road. ;)
I guess I'm just in a mood, thinking about what can get yanked away from you all of a sudden. But our poor Dean - he does always tend to think the other shoe's going to drop.
My gosh, "The Raft" - I haven't read that one in a long time. For the most part, Hope Verse is pretty positive (with the occasional dose of angst) - no supernatural horror going on there since its introductory story.
Well, if you decided to do that, I wouldn't object! *g*
I'm really proud of SNOWFALL - that's where the whole thing begins. It's a Season 1 casefic, with ghosts and drownings and Dean!whumpage and snark and angsty brothers...
Oooh, lovely. You've captured that early-morning feel really well, and I love the way this Dean thinks, all quiet and serious and almost childlike: not at all like the loud outward demeanor he keeps up, but somehow so very *him*. It's a little bit sad, a little bit eerie, and a whole lot of beautiful. (The part about Mary "tipping him carefully back to rinse shampoo from his hair without dripping it into his eyes" -- that in particular feels very true and very touching.)
There were ghosts here, years ago, when he and Sam first came.
There still are, he supposes.
This, too, made me shiver just a little. In a good, good way.
Love the evocative language you've used in this story. It's as if I could see the whole panorama laid out in front of me.
And I liked the way you show some of Dean's fractured memories of his mom, of learning to swim with her and then teaching Sam. Mary might not have taught them to hunt, but at least she gave them one tool they've used to save the life of at least one child each.

There's still at least one ghost hanging around Thompson Lake. In addition to all the ghosts in Dean's memory...
