Title: The Difference Between Me and You
Characters: Audrey (implied Audrey/Matt)
Word Count: 500
Rating: PG
A/N: Started off as a response to a_to_z_prompts's "Red-hot", but gradually moved away from that when I rewrote it.
Summary: "She finds out that Matt's left town from his goddamn boss."

She finds out that Matt's left town from his goddamn boss. He didn't have the nerve to tell her himself, so here she is: stuck in the middle of a case with no leads and needing one stroke of luck, anything at all, and her lucky charm is in a whole different state. Audrey stands with one hand braced on her hip as she listens to Matt's superior on the telephone telling her in his lazy voice that Matt's transferred to New York.

You solved cases before you ever met him, she reminds herself. You'll get to the bottom of this one too.

Yet, when she slams the phone down with a frustrated groan, that isn't what's bothering her. Not the professional jam she's ended up in, not the witnesses that refuse to talk, not the leads she's lacking - it's that Matt left without thinking to tell her.

She needs to clear her mind almost as much as she needs to find answers. Her stormy eyes glance to the clock on the wall. She could take her lunch break now. Take a walk, get some air, work out the frustration by pounding the sidewalk. Her thin lips press together as she grabs her jacket, leaving with only a wave of her hand and mumbled explanation for the other agents in the office.

Her mindless feet take her further than they should in no distinct direction - she usually grabs a coffee and a sandwich at her desk to avoid wasting time. Every second is vital, yet here she wasting so many of them as she walks and thinks about Matt, thinks about the past year, thinks about her mind-numbing career and the potential friendships she's lost because of it. The sun's brighter than it should be and her shoulders remain hunched.

Before she returns to work she hunts for her cell phone and leaves a message - "Matt, it's Audrey. Just call me back, okay?"

She doesn't expect a response, not really. It'll be the latest in a long line of messages, the newest one in his collection. She thinks she should've got the hint by now, should have shrugged and given up on him. It's not like she knew him too well anyway. Not like she got attached. Not like she liked him. Not like she was that unprofessional, right?

Head bowed, she brushes her blonde hair back from her face and turns around, beginning the demoralising walk back towards the office. She hasn't eaten and now she finds herself starving but there's no time. There never is.

Her fingers stroke over the cell phone in her pocket as she walks back to work - it doesn't ring. It won't. Matt's found a new life, moved on, turned his back on the rest of them. He's running from the world and from his life. She doesn't do that. She squares her shoulders, keeps her head held high - Audrey's jaw is set. Long strides, strong shoulders, determination in her eyes. Audrey will face her problems head-on.
