I have a question for you all out there:

1. When it came time to quit work, because it was to taxing on your body, who made the decision?
You or your doctor.

Me. I was working (testing software), then going to bed for about 2 weeks, then going back to work, for about 8 months. Then, finally I collapsed in a meeting. That was the end of that - never went back to work, sent in my resignation letter 6 months later.
My dr didn't actually diagnose me with M.E. for 4 months after that but I was seeing him every week during that time that I could - I was so sick and neither of us knew why.

I did. I was working retail while going to college, and I was in so much pain from working on the weekends that I kept missing classes during the week. It was a terrible job and there were factors other than the pain that led me to quit, but now that I've graduated I still haven't found a job because all of my experience is in retail, and I know that if I go back to that I'm going to run myself into the ground. I did it for five years, and by the end I was walking around with a shopping cart to lean on because I couldn't hold myself upright for 8 hours.

I did. Best decision i made too. It was killing me. Worked in a sewing factory as a team lead. Between the nasty people... the hours just getting longer and longer.. working 6 days a week, with hints of going to 7. Supervisor just piling more on.. I had to. I started to have panic attacks just thinking about the job. I was out sick for a few days.. and finally just emailed my Supervisor with my immediate resignation. With the stress, there was no way i could handle the polite 2 weeks.

You only have one body. You can't replace it. We, especially, have to take care of that body. When folks think about quitting their jobs, they usually have already stayed in it too long. And in this economy, we push and push. If you have a job, shouldn't you keep it... NO! You only have one body. Treat it well.

i did. i was working as a bus attendant on a special needs school bus. LOTS of lifting small children up into car seats, pushing wheelchairs into their places and securing them, fastening seatbelts, up and down constantly and walking up and down the aisles as the bus was moving.

i'd come home crying after the first run, then have to go back in the afternoon and do it again. my husband said "enough". i still have terribly bad days just being the house faerie (you know...who does laundry? the faerie around here...same with any other chore).

I was fired because of accommodations and anxiety attacks. They didn't say as much, but that + queer is why.

The next day, my partner and I decided it was time to file. When I spoke to my doctor, he fully supported my decision.
