Why this must be read:
This one is... I think "creepy" would be the best choice of word if I had to use just one, but I don't think it can be summed up that quickly or that easily. The melding, in a rather disjointed fashion, of the two universes and their characters is done amazingly well in this story, to the point where it's hard to be certain of which is "real" and which is not. The mystery of the piece is what makes it so marvellous, and the pairing - what I see as Laura's attempt to hold on to something, anything to keep herself in one place given the rest of the mood of the story - is done subtly and well. To know Laura's attempts never to appear uncertain, coupled with Inara's calm certainty that whatever happens, everything will be all right, and to have them matched together in the way they are in this story, is astounding and breathtaking.
