I like 0% of the characters from 90% of all Hollywood movies. That's because they're generally not good people or pathetically lame. This opinion is heavily influenced by the fact that Hollywood only has two characters for women to play: madonas and whores.
I didn't just not like them. I actively despised them, and wanted them to die in grotesque and hopefully cinematic ways.
I disagree with you about the Madonna/whore dichotomy. I think that's an oversimplification. it's pretty clear that there are other roles. We have good women who actually have sex - clearly neither Madonna nor whore. And we occasionally see women who are not viewable in a primarily sexual way at all, which takes them out of the running.
I do know that other people have written on this topic- I just disagree with them also. :)
I was looking forward to thsi movie until I found out that instead of being a cleverly done Lovecraft flick it was a remake of Godzilla 96 with a cleverly done marketing campaign
Yeah, I found their use of rumors ("is it Cthulhu?" ... "Is it Voltron?" .. etc) offputting as well.
But even as a straightforward "Godzilla 08", it could have been wonderful. I *like* cheesy monster movies. I actually liked Godzilla 96 - if that causes you to revise your opinion of me, so be it.
I just expect less from rubber-monster movies, and usually what I get is fun. Cloverfield simply isn't.
I went in like a 5 year old, expecting nothing but a monster movie, and that I got, so in all I actually liked it. :-) Of course I was raised on horrible monster movies so for me it was a bit nostalgic, and there were a few scenes that made me jump a little and giggle. I give it credit for being an ADD movie, you didn't have to pay too much attention, just enjoy the mayhem. :-) Actually looking more forward to Hellboy II. *bounces*
I loved Hellboy, and I'm also looking forward to II.
Cloverfield, I didn't have any expectations either. I also just expected a monster movie. But I *hated* the people, and I hated the script, and I found the self-indulgent "hand-held" (which was of course really shot mostly with a steady cam) contrivance annoying at best. Feh.
But I'm glad you liked it. I'd say that it's an age thing, but my 17-year-old hated it too.
*chuckles* it may be an appreciation of the inane thing. :-) Hud reminded me of what Hudson might have been like had he not been a Space Marine in Aliens. Just some goofy people who obviously never played D & D (I mean, what happened to the Crowbar!?)
Yeah. And the axe? Hello, McFly, how many times do you have to kill a monster with a weapon you *happened* to find nearby before you stop dropping what you've found and freaking carry it along? I reaaaaallly wanted them all to die.
