I hadn't even thought the mess with fanlib was related, but it makes sense.
(because it is indeed very likely to make the job of real law enforcement more difficult online)
Exactly, because it was announced so publically and LJ, though its large population, is for intents and purpose a small and talkative town. People are warning their friends (hell, I did) and eventually more people are going to hear about this. Anybody who is a real threat has no doubt heard and hidden themselves by removing the trigger Interests words and begun to lock their journals.
I am probably going to feel ridiculous when/if it turns out to be unrelated, but the old saying applies: 'look to whom the crime profits' or something like that...
Yes, that's it! (And would you believe I studied Latin for years at school! I am a disgrace to my teachers... *guilt*)
I am just being paranoid, I know this. But then again, being paranoid does not mean that they are not after you.
And... it turns out that this post may be relevant, as well as the link they refer to here, dated May 19th. And the truth is that LJ gets a lot more money from advertising than they do from paid accounts. So one gets their point of view... except that the problem as far as I can tell is just as much due to LJ accepting reprehensible ads from reprehensible groups as it is due to the content of some LJ communities and journals. I do not think that I have enough information about all this to get all hot under the collar, I just find the whole thing suspicious
( ... )
I doubt it's related to fanlib. If anything this is reminding me of an ad I saw several time on CNN last week. The ad was showing kids citing statistics on child pornography on the net.
The ads said 'we don't need your money, we just need your support'. When I saw that tagline, it made me wonder, because that means you're dealing with religious extremists (in the broad sense of 'religion', ie self-righteousness).
Clearly these extremists have lots of money, and they are recruiting minions who can be their tools in the world. Sounds like the minions have hit LJ. Time to pack up and migrate to an open source community that is run by its members.
In the meantime, everybody could delete their interests. I don't find them to be a very useful feature anyway esp once you know your way around LJ.
Seriously, it is the amount of money behind these people -fanlib and their ilk- that worries me... The entertainment industry is not likely to tolerate for much longer the fact that we are having fun without paying them a cent.
And of course you are right about the LJ interests, but I never used them in the first place myself, either for my own profile or to look up other LJs, so I am not a fair sample.
But let's think about something else instead, it's not as if attacks of paranoia will get us anywhere!
