A grammatical remark: you should always put commas inside your speech marks.

"The boys are 'working', I thought we could spend some time together.

And I believe that comma ought to be a semicolon, though I'm not sure.

& thank you for the grammar comment too -- I do my best but sometimes things slip through. I'm not sure about the comma/semicolon either, I think I tried both and ended up going with the one that looked right... but probably wasn't :P I'll look into it.
