In case any of you were remotely concerned that I'd forsaken our bleached haired wonder vamp (lillianmorgan!) due to my obsession with space hookers and Captain Tight Pants

It's funny 'cause what you're saying is almost exactly like what Jason Behr fans have told me (he played the lead character in Roswell, my "other" fandom - that handsome devil in my banner with Spike) when I said that I wasn't interested in meeting him.
I think that there are just some people (like James, Jason, etc.) that have an incredibly charismatic effect on people.
This is actually a really interesting subject. I think it would be great to meet any of the actors that play characters I love. Not because they ARE their characters, because they're not, but because it would be interesting to see what they are really like, what their interests are, and if they feel about their characters something like the fans do. It's interesting to see the person behind the character

It's interesting that you go right to RPF. I actually am less squicked by RPF than *extreme* actor fandom (which is not what I was talking about in this post actually but I can see the connection). But I'm thinking of RPF that fully acknowledges itself as fiction rather than more tin hatty stuff.
Run of the mill actor fandom is fine, whatever. It's not so much my thing but that's cool. I don't care.
I scratch my head though when people are really overly invested in the tiny details of actors' lives and are like, willing to fight with one another about stuff and/or have elaborate conceptions about how say, they and actor X are "meant to be" or whatever.
Real People Fiction that acknowledges itself as fiction is actually something very different than that. In a way, famous people have multiple "selves" - they have the iconic representation and then there is the "real" person. This is especially true of celebritites that really have "personas." Since we *don't* know them and most likely never will, say

Hehe...I admit to getting all fan-girlish when I find out so-and-so's birthday is near mine, or he likes the same book I do, or some such thing...but not to the point where I feel even slightly stalkerish or anything

I don't think there's anything wrong with actor (or writer or musician) fandom. I just don't do it so much. But whenever I say that I don't do something I don't generally mean that people who do are bad or wrong

Very cool thoughts. And no, I was only teasing. Besides, I haven't yet seen Serenity so I daren't spoil myself and read what you've written yet. I was just thinking about how Spike is probably the fictional character who is most *real* to me. I heart what you say here, very much. Spike is definitely the character I carry around in my mind, and wonder how he'd cope in situations. But Spike is the "fake person" who seems to inhabit the most vibrant space of his own, both inside and out of the show, our fanfics, etc. I think the cool thing about Spike is that he is amenable to every situation and every person - he's a poet, a punk, a lover and a fighter. He can be a killer, an awful bastard who'll sweet talk you then eat your heart out when you least expect it (literally and metaphorically) - or he can be the eyes and ears of everyone around. That's why you can write Spike schmoop, smut, angst and horror. It all works, baby. Spike is a distinct entity and interesting and sexy to me in a way that JM the "real guy" is not.Yeah, and JM

Gah! No time but I totally agree with you especially about the versatility of Spike's character.
Has Serenity not come out there yet? Oh and the latest drabble (the Inara POV one) wasn't spoilery for it btw, but no worries. And I *knew* you were just teasing. But you knew that already. *g*
Because it is Spike that I'm most concerned with. And my point here actually has to do with what a great acting job JM did - Spike is a distinct entity and interesting and sexy to me in a way that JM the "real guy" is not.
Oh, I completely agree. And all respect to JM, who did such a marvelous job portraying the character, and who I wish would get another acting job worthy of his talent. But my ridiculous crush, my fascination with the character and his relationships, all of that is about Spike, not JM. He's the one I want to know everything about, not the actor.
I have seen Chance, at the con where I uh, got JM's autograph. Hee. And last year a very kind friend sent me a copy of my very own. Anyway, how elastic is your definition of "good"? Because I liked it well enough, but it got a lot of goodwill from me for starring actors that I enjoy so much. If it had starred people I had never seen before, I'm not sure I would have liked it so much. It's easy to tell that it's the work of a first time filmmaker, but it does have some genuinely funny scenes, and JM and AB play off of each other well.
Hmmm, maybe I should get some of my Buffy loving friends to go in on it with me. I've watched plenty of shaky independent films in my time. Plus, JM's got the Spike hair in it and I never said I was above shameless lusting. Hee. Plus I'd be interested to see what kind of on screen chemistry he and AB have together.
It's weird but lately lots of my friends who never watched Buffy before are all going wild with the DVDs and I'm like the resident "person to talk to about Buffy." Of course if I get into it too much they think I'm a little crazy, but you know. *g*
I very rarely fan on actors or muscians--I admire their work or whatever, but it's the characters whom I obsess about. I like JM's work and I wish him well, and I admire his willingness to be so damn nice to fans who sometimes verge on the scary. But I don't have any desire to meet him or debate the rightness of his current girlfriend.

Totally. Hey, are you one of the few people who've seen "Chance?" Is it good? I'm curious.

Heh. I've heard that he gets his ass squeezed a lot. I can't imagine handling the buttocks of anyone who wasn't a close friend. *g*
