In case any of you were remotely concerned that I'd forsaken our bleached haired wonder vamp (lillianmorgan!) due to my obsession with space hookers and Captain Tight Pants
( Read more... )
Thanks for sharing your thoughts , and no , I don't think you will piss anyone. ;-) "Spike is the "fake person" who seems to inhabit the most vibrant space of his own, both inside and out of the show, our fanfics" Very well said.
I'm a Spike fan too. And like you I believe that James 's awesome interpretation has something to do with the fact that that fictional character had such a strong impact on our imaginations.
There are a lot of people sharing your views on JM. They consider him a great actor , didn't always appreciate his comments on Spike or Spuffy -I guess the majority of his fans don't agree , but they forgive him . ;-) , and don't really care about his life , or his singing. Because it's Spike that they are" most concerned with."
And there are fans of James , for a great number of reasons . I noticed that the majority of those persons have met him in conventions , or went to his musical sets. And people who don't particularly like him - the man - , or at least , don't follow his career , have never met him.
I am a James fan , in the sense of I have a great admiration for his acting abilities , I enjoyed his solo musical sets recently , and , according to me , he's physically gorgeous - a distinct being , not Spike , of course , but beautiful and interesting in his own way - . He's a passionate person, whose inner fire burns bright.
I absolutely don't agree with a lot of things he 's saying on different matters , he made me smile and sigh numerous time , but it touched me a lot more.
I've met him three times, and it remain a very sweet experience. :)
Forgive me for taking so much space in your journal! But James is one of my favorite subject in this community. Yet I totally respect and understand people who don't think so. (If you're interested , I posted my opinions here http://www.livejournal.com/users/jamalov29/2005/05/16/)
Don't worry about taking up space in my journal. I really don't mind. :)
In general my fandom tends to be more towards characters than actors. I have very little interest in meeting the actors that play my favorite characters.
*shrugs*
That's just how I am.
If I like an actor and their screen presence though I will watch most things that they're in. I intend to check out the Smallville episodes that JM is in, for example.
I dunno, my fandom of "celebrities" is just very different than it is of characters. For example, I'm a big Tori Amos fan and can listen to her music an insane amount of the time but I don't know as much about her as other fans do. I mean I'm interested in her creative process and stuff but mostly I just like to listen to her songs.
I will check out your post, sometime when it's not 1 in the morning. *g*
I'm glad that you didn't think that the way that I worded things in my post would piss anyone off because it certainly isn't my intention. To each their own kind of fandom, I say. (As long as they're not trying to bash me or impede me being fangirly my way, it's all good).
Of course, my icon right now is of Jon Stewart so there you go. Although as a comedian he's sort of in another category. And I know absolutely nothing about his life other than what he says on his show.
I do think however that for a lot of people, being fans of specific icons can serve an important purpose for them in their lives and give them a lot of pleasure. For example, I know that fandom of certain celebrities is an important part of identity formation for a lot of people. (And there's been some really interesting scholarly work about say, Elvis, Madonna and David Bowie fans for example).
I can't really talk about other fandoms , since the Jossverse is the first and only i 'm tied up to. I guess they all work in the same way.
The strange thing with my current experience is that I had never felt the desire to meet ANY actors playing my favorite roles. I admire and appreciate a great lot of french or american actors , but it never came on my mind to want to meet them in real life. So it must be something with James special attraction, not sinister but irresistible nonetheless? ;-) The singers that I admire , well , it's the same approach : I enjoy their music , i try to go to their concerts of course , but i don't care to know more about them .
I used to like deeply Daniel Day Lewis , and i can assure you that I didn't feel the slightest need to look for anything else but his movies.
*ponders*
What it is about with my love for James? I'm a happily married woman !!!
-- Lust , you say ? "Plain old lusting" ? Well yes. Hey , but it's more than that!
-I believe you have to meet the man to see what I mean. :)
I'm all about fictions too! .. and James sexiness..
It's funny 'cause what you're saying is almost exactly like what Jason Behr fans have told me (he played the lead character in Roswell, my "other" fandom - that handsome devil in my banner with Spike) when I said that I wasn't interested in meeting him.
I think that there are just some people (like James, Jason, etc.) that have an incredibly charismatic effect on people.

Plus, plain old lusting is fun.
I'm just all about the fiction.
